Yesterday was a very rough day. My wife and I decided to have Zoe put to sleep. Her hip and knee problems were getting worse and worse. This was the right thing to do, but also the hardest. She was the best copilot ever.
I'm so sorry to hear that Mike. Danise was too. Be proud that you gave her a much better life than many dogs get, riding copilot in your FJ Cruiser on many outings and camping trips.
Fellow Dog Family - As my sig states - dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole. Making the decision you made yesterday is, without a doubt, one of life's toughest. My wife and I have had pups for our entire married life (27 years) and we've had to do the same for our furry family. There will always be a place in your heart for Zoe, keep fond memories of her in your dreams. I am so sorry for your loss.
Mike I'm sorry to hear it. I closely feel what you are going through. I don't think anyone on here knows it yet, but my Blanca Peak experience ended on a bad note--Maggie, my 12 year old Aussie that's been with me since her birth, somehow fell out of my fj-40 as I turned onto hwy 84/285 above Espanola. It was late, we were exhausted, and I don't know what happened. But the top and doors were off and she was tied in. She didn't hit the ground but apparently suffered some neurological damage and can barely walk now. It's killing me because it should not have happened and I can't stand to see her suddenly so immobile. I'm hopeful things will get better, but time will tell.
I'm sorry to hear about both your dogs. I've always said - dogs are people too. They are such a part of our lives that they just become part of the family.
If you get a chance, go out and google "The Rainbow Bridge." It's a writing that the vet shared with us when we lost a cat. The bottom line is that the pets go to a wonderful place where we'll have a chance to meet up with them again when it's our turn to go.
I actually have a sort-of good-news update on Maggie. Sunday night she didn't want to put her right front down. I got her into the vet on Tuesday, and she somehow broke her radius and ulna. The first vet missed it, unfortunately. But she's in a cast now, and seems to be doing better. I think any neuro damage is going to be minor, most of her difficulty seems to have been from the broken arm.
That is good news. Sorry to hear that she's got broken bones, but those can heal. She may not be too happy about being in a cast (I've been there - I don't blame her!), but she'll get through it. This is a much better prognosis than your first note about Maggie. We'll think positive thoughts for her and your family to get through this.
