Are you re-using the coolant? That would actually be possible since its not going all over your floor.

The reason I ask is; Toyota coolant is expensive stuff.

Toyota has two coolants...red and pink. I believe the red is full strength coolant, and the pink is pre-mixed 50/50.

Yeah, I usually re-use it, run it though a paint filter on the way back in, have always done that.

.

Cool. Good idea on the filter.

:)

K, looks like rings my man.... One way to check quickly is the cap blow by test. Take off oil filler cap, rev engine, if you feel air coming through the filler hole... rings are shot or severely worn.

If its bad enough you can place cap over filler hole and rev, it can in some cases make the cap dance..

All diesel engines have some degree of blow by, by design, but if either of the issues above are seen.. Its the rings 99% of the time.

Thanks Jason, I like the cap test idea, hadn't thought of that, I usually just pull the vent line and give it a feel.

Gave it a shot, nothing really obvious though, couldn't really get the cap to move except to kind of wiggle in place as the idle re stabilizes after a punch:

Seeing a slight hint of smoke. Not too bad though. With your hand over the filler hole can you feel a puff or blow when you rev the engine?

Also, another thing to do is pull the oil dipstick and watch for smoke. See if your smoking above and below rings (dipstick-below/ filler cap-above) I doubt its a fueling issue, but maybe.. Also, check your compression vs. FSM.

Smoke is not always a positive ID of bad compression/rings in a diesel..

Compression numbers are in post #337.
They are a bit more spread out than they should be, but still well above spec.

With my hand over the fill cap I really can't seem to feel anything (it's loud under there, the rad fan is moving air around, there is hot air in the valve cover that wants to come out anyway, etc.)
If anything I feel a slight hit of vacuum on deceleration, maybe since the valve cover vent is plumbed into the air intake and the turbo is drawing a bit of air?
Everything effects everything.

As for the dip-stick, I'm pretty sure the HZ has a bunch of huge ports that drain right down into the crank case? The dipstick should vent the same relative environment as the filler cap?

Truck still runs great, gets good milage, no noticeable change in power, etc.

Hi kevin. Love your car and wagon gear.
Do a leak down test to get your answer. I wote for valve seal oil leak.

I am voting for a cheap/easy fix so Kevin can spend his time producing gear for my addiction - after the vacation, of course.

Yup, (and thanks! and welcome to Mud! :flipoff2:) I modified my compression tester to pressurize the cylinders with some air, will see if I can find some leaks that way, might get to it tonight.

Thanks Ward, nice to know I can count on you to look out for number-one. :p
You've got plenty to do with taking care of the new WA house!
60 series meet-up at Wards new house everyone!

K -
A guy's gotta have his priorities straight.

No joy yet on the cabin - its not a done deal yet - the bank has some funny ideas about assets, liabilities and ability to repay loans ****ing unreasonable bankers - I should know, I used to be one.

Cruiserheads are welcome but ya gotta like fish and related mollusks.

Any updates? How is your engine doing?

Zack

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been kinda bummed with a broken truck in the driveway and temps pushing 100* here.

So, motor = no good.
Last year we decided that since August here in OR is way too hot for our liking that we would save our pennies, take the month off and drive to Alaska.
Instead my wife flew up there last week and I'm stuck here in the heat. :p

Anyway, we were able to get my folks out here for a visit a couple weeks ago, the plan was to take them around the state (which we did), camp, and monitor the motor condition for a go-nogo on the AK trip. We did about 1400 miles and by about halfway through it was apparent that it would be a no-go.
The good news is that I fixed the oil burning issue with the turbo rebuild, we didn't loose any oil on the trip, but apparently the turbo needed to be rebuilt due to slowly increasing crank-case pressures as a result of the #1 piston failing. We lost power and developed a rhythmic stumble. Removing the oil cap or dipstick shows a synchronized puff-puff-puff of blow-by. By the trips end we were a 5 cylinder, cold starts are pretty rough, the number one cylinder won't compression ignite until the friction builds up some heat.
All that considered, the truck still ran remarkably well. :p
In all likelihood we probably could have driven to AK and back, but the risk to motor and truck (and wallet) is just too high to justify.
Instead my wife had her sister scrounge up some flights and she flew up there earlier this week, cheaper in the long run but a real downer.

So I've been moping around and trying to stay out of the heat. But I got off my arse this past week to get some work done, the motor is not doing any good in the truck even if I can't afford to fix it, so yesterday afternoon I took the motor out and today I worked on tearing it down a bit.

Before I pulled the motor I did another compression check, all pistons were fine but the #1 was 175psi lower than it's already lower reading from before.

Here is a video of the blow-by at a road-side stop from the trip:

Truck was great other than that, and we had a great little trip around OR with my folks.

Truck looks good at least. :p

And we had a really nice camping trip.

I'll cross-post this in the diesel section thread here:

And that will be a motor-rebuild thread now.

So sad to read this Kev. I guess the best we can do to help is ORDER MORE WAGGON GEAR! Come on fellow mudders help kevin by buying his awesome products! Give tubby a scratch and don't worry the temps will drop soon.

Sorry to hear that Kevin, engine failures suck.

On the up side, think of all the additional things you can powder coat now! :p
