I've never used chains except for a pair of cable chains on our old 2wd Chevy.

What should I look for in tire chains?

What are the applications for chains? IE how much help are they in situations other than snow like mud?

Do the same principals apply for my SWB FJ40 and my LWB UZJ100?

Dan...there are some answers here:

I sincerely doubt you will have adequate clearance for any chain with your Toyo MT equipped 100. However Les Schwab, per the above thread, is where I bought mine...you could purchase 1-pair and try them on for size test...return them or buy another pair.

I would go for the aggressive chains per the above link (Trygg or Trygg type) for your 40 if you want them primarily for off-road traction. Try Pewag in Sparks www.pewagchain.com for these. I have purchased from them...good guys and they know their stuff regarding anything to do with chain.

My father runs a set of cable chains on his plow truck and they are all but worthless. I have a set of straight bar chains on one of my vehicles and they work really well, but the v-bar style offers the best grip when its really icy. Be careful off road as they give you a monster grip and make it really easy to break stuff. I know someone that tore the frontend apart in his scout running front chains in the woods. I've bought several sets of chains from www.tirechains.com and have been very happy with them.

On ifs frontends there is not enough room for agressive chains in front. They will hit the a arm. I use cable chains in front and steel chains in back.
