hey i was out messing around and hit a big rock with the pinion flange witch snapped the shaft :doh:so i have a spare axel, popped it open and thers rust in there  i wire brushed it but there is some pitting should i run it or look for somthing else ?????? it be :beer:30

well i took a couple of pics you can see the rust it doesnt look to bad if i put it in do you think it will last or esplode in first ten mile or the first time i put a load on it

For me it would depend on the rust...

If it was come small surface rust, thats not too bad. But if there is pitting, as you also stated then my vote would be to pass on the R, as the housing obviously sat with condensation and no oil movement for a lot of years to cause pitting in the hardened steel of the R & P....

That being said, I recently came into possesion of a set of 76 40 axles on saturday (Thanks F:D) and was going to strip them down for parts / spares. If you would like to have first dibs on the pinion center - you are more than welcome to partake in the cruiser Karma that was offered me.

thanks josh i think ill take one, or well work some more to even up , upon closer inspection four ring teeth are pitted bad and one on the pinion looks terrible so when can i come over what works for you:beer:

I fly back into PHX on Friday night....anytime after would be fine. After I thought about it more, I have One (two?) rings (can't remember gear ratio) in my Part attic as well!
I don't know the condition(s), as I have a bad habit of saving everything, even those items of dubious quality & condition. I'm sure between em all you should be good...

ok catch up with you on weekend have a couple of birthday partys to do but could figure somthing out one night:beer:

my axels are out of a 71 ,sombody told me that all the early years were the same 411's (true or false), hey im locked in front do you think i should lock the back two? it four wheels good now i cant complain:hhmm:

On the rust thing; cant tell from the pix, but any significant pitting will weaken them. My concern would be more about the bearings, rust can easily destroy them. That said if it going in the front, it wont see street speeds, so is somewhat less important.

IIRC all of the early, (up to '78?) diffs are course spline (10?) after that the somewhat stronger fine spline (27?). Unless they have been regeared, then all bets are off, with the diff out it's simply a count the teeth deal to confirm ratio.

On the locker; IMHO the first locker would go in the rear. The rear axle is stronger and a locker is often most effective/beneficial in the rear.

my thought was the locker was tuff on stuff on the street by unlocking the hub its not an issue so my choice was to put it in the front, but your saying you would lock up both ends

Mine is locked both ends, but if I only had one locker, it would be in the rear.

X2. Go rear First. Steering is the main issue with a front locker - unless you go ARB or fully selectable$$$.

Howdy! I think the front/only locker is popular in areas that have lots of mud and snow. Your steering axle pulls you thru the goo. Around here it is probably better to have a single locker in the rear, as that is where the weight/traction is when you are climbing rocks. John

well im waiting for josh, getting a little antsy ,pondering things with the rear end thinking about axel wrap, thinking gussets and some kind of truss heres what i did today:p oh its hard to see but the red arrows show broken teeth and huge dent from pinion nut

Where can I get a clamp like in the picture?

the besse clamp is the one of top line (like snap on) that clamp is a stong arm an i got it at praxair ;)

Tearing down went according to plan...the interior of this axle was in much better shape than expected - one of the cleanest sets of old 40 axles on the inside conmpared to the outside that I have ever seen. They had had a rebuild not too long before they were removed...Even the oil was clean, new bearings etc....can't really tell from the pics.

Claudia - Axles were in excellent shape, coarse spline early axles. You can see the difference on the splines in the last one with one of my fine spline extras. There yours.
