Bought a 2007 GX. Before I put my money down I crawled under it and was pleased with the overall low amount of rust given it's 17 years old.

While putting the lift in I noticed the gas tank straps had rusted through. I was really surprised. I haven't gotten around to replacing yet and (yes famous last words) "It doesn't look like it will be that difficult to do"

Two questions:
  1. Is this common?
  2. Any tips on getting this done?

Follow up question...
Should I go ahead and replace the fuel pump while I'm doing this?

The tank straps of our '08 GX470 looked like they had been on the ocean floor for a century. I replaced them without dropping the tank. You can keep the fuel tank hanging in ratchet straps, remove the skid plate and then replace the tank straps without removal of the tank. I made sure to coat the new straps liberally in Fluid Film (also underneath the rubber sleeves). It was also the perfect time to clean up the skid plate.

Here is a very detailed thread that explains the steps:

Wow this is awesome and I will definitely use the power coated straps from Rock Auto. This is going to save me a ton of time and frustration.

It's not to bad of a Job - I can have the Cover off in 5 mins.
Lift or Drive the Back End up on Ramps.
3/8 Extension and Impact Runner with 3/8 Adapter and 12mm Socket.
Drop the Tank Cover and Wire Wheel it if Rusted.
Spray it with Fluid Film before Reinstall. Spray Inside and Install then Spray Outside.
Put a Jack on Center of Tank.
Remove the Front Strap Bolt should be 14mm. Clean it with Wire Wheel in Vice, Put a Dab of Axle Grease on Threads
Remove Strap Hinge Pin - You can Cut the Wire it the Pin if you plan to Replace it. I did
Remove Sleeve on Strap and Put on New Strap. Put 3-4 Zip ties to Hold it.
Put on New Strap Hinge pin First then Bolt.
Repeat for Back.

If your Good this Job is 30 Mins.

My Hardware was Gnarly so I replaced it all minus the Pins.

I cannot recommend Fluid Film enough if you live in a Rust Belt. It literally Saves these Trucks.

That's Full Tank Drop - Did mine this Week due to Rusted out Rear Brake Line.

Now it has all New Brake Lines from Middle of Doors Back.

No Need to Drop the Tank to Change the Straps.
