I tried a brief search, but as you can imagine there are a lot of threads on rust removal on the board. I thought it would be easier to just ask. I am a noob to any body work. I just want to stop the rusting process for now until I start a resto down the road. My question is: when I am sanding rusty areas, some areas leave a dark spot that is pitted. Is this getting down to bare metal or am I going to have those spots pop up on me again in a few months? Thanks for your help. Jim

no,

that will resurface.

Bare metal is what it sounds like, bare and shiney.

Some rust may not be repairable. If you have body panels that have rusted all the way through, you may need to weld in new metal.

It happens all the time to these trucks.

Here's some photos of what mine looked like before and after metal repairs.

As you can see it was bad, I had grinded and wire brushed it as much as i could then primered it to keep the rust form getting worse.

I went to a junk yard and bought "new" rear quarter panels. I then hired a body guy to weld in the replacement metal panel - grind everything down, and bondo a little and primer.

Sounds like you just need to go a little deeper.

Spray phospheric (sp?) acid onto the area, and it will kill the rust. Then seal with a rust paint like POR15, and your all good... (this is for pitting, and NOT rust through)
