Bought this 2005 Lx470 with 150k for 11k. Knew there was a little surface rust but after getting in there it might be more of a problem than I can handle myself.

Should I wire brush and coat myself or take it to a body shop? My main concern is safety, I don’t want a break line going out or the original AHC to fail. Thanks for looking.

I did have it “inspected” before purchase and they quoted me 2k, but they didn’t lift if and I don’t think they saw all this.

It looks like there's a pretty decent amount of rust. you have several options, depends on what your budget is. you can spend less and jsut slow it down, or you can spend a lot and try to clean up and correct it. there are a lot of threads on here about rust.

Thanks for the reply. I had budgeted about 2k for the rust situation. Do you think that clean up and correction is upwards of that?
 
Got it. Is there any safety concern with this level of rust? Like a brake line leaking? That’s the only reason I’d consider a professional. Thanks.
My fuel lines and brake lines required replacement due to similar amount of rust, but nothing super challenging or expensive. All 3 hard fuel lines from front to back, were $142 from the dealer.

yes, at the very least you should inspect the brake lines for rust. just follow them from the master cylinder back to where to they go. AHC lines are also common to rust out, but that's not so much of a safely concern
 
My fuel lines and brake lines required replacement due to similar amount of rust, but nothing super challenging or expensive. All 3 hard fuel lines from front to back, were $142 from the dealer.
Was this before or after they discontinued one of the brake lines? I thought about ordering all new ones but it seems like one of them you have to bend yourself
 
Without being a mechanic by trade, I'd judge this as rough surface rust and not structural.

I personally would disassemble, wire brush/ taking rust down by whatever means, treat, paint. I would think this would be fine for Colorado.

What you could potentially think about is to replace upper and lower control arm fully and just work on the rest yourself. The whole package is ~$1k at CruiserTeq (Front Upper & Lower Control Arm Kit- Fits 1998 - 2007 IFS 100/470 Applications (SUS100FCAKITJP) - https://cruiserteq.com/front-upper-lower-control-arm-kit-fits-1998-2007-ifs-100-470-applications-sus100fcakitjp/) and you would have new joints/ bushings all around and don't need to worry for another 200k miles...
That leaves another 1k for potential rust treatment on other parts.

In case you go that route and you have the parts already in hand you can also think about refreshing all bearings/ bushings/ seals in both knuckles and your whole front suspension is all set.

That’s a really helpful reply thank you. The seller did an A/C recharge before they sold it and it just went out so I’m assuming that is another victim of the rust. I’ll absolutely replace the bearings/bushings/seals.
