Well...I gotto enjoy a little bonding time with my old man tonight. I got pass along a little of my welding teaching. I am been getting more confident in my ability, so I figure'd he would be easy to teach. I would say he's doing prett well.
No bad for his first time eh?

I'm getting better at getting into akward tight spaces...here's the frame mounts

Now just another few hours of grinding and smoothing. The spindle for the swing away should be here late in the week...so it'll be nice to wrap this one up and start a front bumper for my commando.

s***E!!!!
Looking awesome...nice welds too!
How much do you think that thing is gonna weigh?
I wish Id have thought about using flat stock...that is a GREAT IDEA that would have saved me TONS of time cutting which has been the biggest time consumer of the project.
Diggin the mock up too! Ill keep that in mind for the front!

I'd say about 50 lbs right now...and about 70 with the swing out. Heavy, but not unreasonable at all compared to other bumpers I've had.

are those frame mounts 2x4? Just an FYI, they won't fit inside the frame rail at that dimension. Inside frame rails on mine were about 3 9/16.

No...it's 1.5"x3" 1/4 wall. I still need to sleeve the bolt holes with some DOM and make the outter backing plates. I picked up some POR 15...so I need to scrape the frame and paint it first after I cut out the last bit of rust (rear crossmember)

Why didnt you go with solid 1x3 for the mounts?

Just for the simple fact that I had the 1.5x3 laying around......well..plenty of it laying around from past projects. And drilling mounting holes in 1/4" is easier than 1" :D
If I was planning on doing the recovery points through to the mounts...then I would have used the 1" thick stock...but i'll be using some teraflex bolt on mounts like I put on my commando bumper since I had them.

OK...so a quick little update. I should have used my common sense and built the bumper on the rig. I cut out the rear crossmember and cut the rear frame flush with the body. After that...I realized I needed to move the entire bumper up 2.5" to look how I wanted it to. So i need to completely remove the frame mounts. I will have to support the 1/4 protection or run longer frame supports to hold the weight.

My spindle for the swing out and handle arrived from AtoZ Fab today...so I should have some completed pics soon.

I have to plate the frame while I'm back tere and box it in to make it pass state inspection. They really don;t like seeing rust that bad :D

Any updates?

hmmmmm....no real updates yet. I havn;t had the time to remake the frame mounts yet or finish welding it yet....but hopefully after I finish the cage for my crawler
