This is a southern coastal car, how does the rust look? I can't tell what is painted over rust exactly vs. just the rough coating from the factory. It's a '97 I'm looking at

Looks like someone more recently than not took a few cans of undercoating spray to it.

Would be hard to say for sure until you crawl under it and see whats hiding (or not)

Looks like quite the oil leak up front too.

A quick scan of the pictures and I see that:
  • Someone's definitely done some overcoating, possibly more, to address rust
  • There has been relevant amounts of rust on that rig but it doesn't look fatal from the photos
  • You need to inspect this one carefully for rust issues in body panels, around the spare tire, etc.
  • There is enough rust to impact desirability/value in my opinion
You can search this site for undercarriage photos to get a sense for the original finishes on the the frame and undercarriage components.

It does look like it's been sprayed recently but by itself doesn't mean
it's a goner.

Key places IMO to check for rust:

As already mentioned, look above and around the spare tire, better if you can drop the spare but not required

The lower inside edge/lip of the doors, near the weatherstrip, often starts around/under the seam sealer.

Around the windshield "frame", check for "bubbles"

Around the inside edges and front nose (underside) of the hood
where the seam sealer is located.

Just below/under the rear hatch dust deflector (wing) mounts (if it has the wing).

The rear-most section of the rocker panels, just in front of the rear wheel wells below the rear doors.

Post up a few photos of the engine bay including the firewall, inner fenders, and radiator supports. Those areas are generally not sprayed with undercoating so they might still show the true amount of rust on the brackets and bolts.

Looks awesome. Usually on here, people that live in rust-prone areas have a vastly different opinion than people who don't. I had some light frame rust in spots on mine (Indianapolis area for most of its life) and the only really "bad" spot was the rear quarter, behind the mud flap. It's missing about 2" of metal. I have a patch section I have not welded in yet. It looks like black Fluid Film has been sprayed on the one you're asking about. Wipe some off and see what it looks like under it, especially around the spare. Just because Fluid Film is on there doesn't mean they're trying to hide something. It is a rust preventative after all.

I also have a 1st gen Sequoia. The frames on 80s are so much better than Sequoias.

I would agree with zapatius. I'm in KY and picked up an 80 back in September that had some rust on the back end undercarriage. This looks similar to mine after I did some treating and rust removal. I have a couple spots in my rear quarters that I still need to patch but my frame is rock solid. Just depends on what you are willing to work with and what kind of deal you can get on the truck. I've had to take some time to scrape, treat, and spray a number of areas to get rid of scaling and also a number of rusty bolts that like to break off and test my patience... If the seller is telling you its a perfect "rust free", etc, etc... and they want $15,000 for it..... Then you might want to look elsewhere.
