For those that have imported an 80 series to canada, how sticky are they on modded vehicles, lifts, engine swaps, etc
I'd like to hear some first hand experiences

This is best discussed in the Importing section of MUD. This is the technical section associated with 80 series.

Ahh, just found it, can this thread be moved there? or deleted

thanks boss

I’ve imported an 80 into Canada, but its only modification from original was a trailer coupling. No one looked at it or asked about it during the import process.

Google: “Memorandum D19-12-1 Canada” for a useful resource on what is allowed and what isn’t. See particularly the section in Appendix B re: age exempt vehicles, and the section in Appendix E re: inadmissible vehicles.

From what I can tell, they’re not very picky once the car is over 15 years old. They specifically say lift kits are OK. Replacement parts, repaints, hot rods, kit cars, are all OK under the conditions given. There’s no mention of motor swaps, but if they don’t care what motor is in your hot rod, I can’t see why they’re gonna care what’s in your Landcruiser.

They will perform a “visual inspection” at import to ascertain that it’s not a menace to society, and if you plan to register it in Canada it will need to pass a safety inspection.

You can always contact Transport Canada for more details:

i must have misread the stipulations about lifts and modifications, i thought it said no lifts or camperizations etc, but perhaps this was for vehicles newer than 15 years....

I had to go back and read it again, but I'm pretty sure it says lift kits are OK.

From Appendix B of the document referenced above (my comments in yellow):

"The following types of age-exempt vehicles (i.e. over 15 years old) that have been modified are still considered admissible (i.e. OK to import):”
 vehicles having undergone regular maintenance, equipped with replacement parts, or newly
painted, etc.;
 rebuilds/restorations that maintain the older vehicle’s original characteristics:
vehicles equipped with a lift kit, if the vehicle is greater than 15 years of age at time of importation;
 vehicles modified into hot rods or street rods using an age exempt donor body and chassis"

If you haven't done it already, a conversation with an import broker in Canada would probably answer all your questions.

BTW, when they talk about kit cars and hot rods being OK to import, it seems they mean only if the kit was assembled or the hot rod was "built" over 15 years ago. If that's the case, they might want any motor swap to have taken place 15+ years ago, too. Just speculation based on my experiences with bureaucracies, but it would be a good thing to ask about before attempting to import a motor-swapped car into Canada.

good point, ill definitely be calling them

As another point of interest, am looking at importing a 1hd*** variant. Got email as well as verbal confirmation from the EEEC (yes that real) that those power plants are allowed in the country for personal use with no stipulations otherwise as an import. Had heard that there some regulatory changes so I wanted to confirm this before purchase. PM if you need more details.

is that in a truck or just the engine

I just looked into the engine, assume the whole truck would be no issue as well.
