I am on a road trip and was hoping someone could provide details or link for the proper orientation of the t-stat on a '92 3FE. I think mine is working properly but is not seated correctly…

IIRC, there is only 1 way it can go in. If yours is not seated correctly then how can it be working properly? There should be a rubber gasket on top of the thermostat and a paper gasket that seals the 2 halves of the housing.

Are you referring to the jiggle valve? If so it doesn't matter like on the 1fz.
Don't put it in upside down and use the two required seals as Jon stated.

Thank you everyone! Sorry, I know to utilize the search but I am using my phone and fat fingers; well you all know the rest…

The stat is only a few months old (OEM) so it may be something else that I need to dig into. My temp gauge is not coming up to 09:00 and the heat seems a little cooler than normal.

Had everything in properly, gasket looks a bit knackered... Can you order just the gasket?

Yes. They are a few bucks.

Could I pick one of these gaskets up at an auto parts store or would it make sense to order an OEM?

Personally I buy OEM. But if you're on a road trip and can find one at a parts store to get you by then do so. Most toyota dealerships can have them the next morning if you order it first thing.

That water temp sensor broke on my 92. FYI.

I agree, I will have to order one...

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I just replaced that green coolant temp. sensor. Best money spent in a long time. Been fighting a high idle for awhile. Replacing that sensor dropped my idle down 200 rpm. Change it while the t-stat is out. Can't get to it with the neck on there.

Thanks for the insight everyone! Back where it should be...

at least your temp gauge works!
Mine does not. Haven't had time to dig into that yet.
Haven't driven enough to have any issues.

I can't believe how knackered my o-ring was. I knew there had to be an issue with the temp gauge only rising to a 1/4 and then the heat not being so hot.
