Have #8 misfire. I have spare plugs and a coil but I can’t loosen the hard tube bracket in back by #8. Stopped at a dealer but they only had oil change guys there and would do it. The did let me work on it but even with an impact I couldn’t get it loose. I’m going to hit it with penetrating oil and try again. Amy ideas? I’m pretty muck stuck if I can’t move those tubes.

Sorry to hear this, but sounds like you’re on the right track. Bummer this happened on the way to LCDC. I’m assuming you’re somewhere out in the middle of Kanas (think I read you departed today?) Wish I were closer, would come out for moral support

Also, I know you don’t want to shear the bolt, but try a breaker bar? It’s amazing how much extra torque you get with a few more inches of lever.

With a hot engine, it will be harder as the steel bolt expands a bit more than the aluminum valve cover. Go get some freeze off stuff at an auto parts store and PB.

While the motor is cooling, blast it with PB. Once cold, hit it with the freeze stuff. That the best chance you will have.

Thanks all. got it fixed. Super hot out on KS and as Ben said above hot engine, steel bolt, aluminum head made this hard. hit it with PB and freeze stuff, and let the engine cool down and got the bolt on the bracket out. I need to go back and look at my records but I'm sure I had the dealer replace all plugs at 100K (I'm at 155K now). When I got the plug out, it looks like the original and burned around the porcelain. The coil was corroded too. before I took it out, I had cleared the codes and it was running with no check engine light but was a little rough. I had a spare coil with me so I put that in with a new plug. All good now.

While not how I wanted the beginning of the trip to start there are several things here that are pretty amazing.

1. While in the middle if BFKansas (i can say that cuz I'm from Kansas) I start throwing codes within 15 miles of an open Toyota dealer.

2. The Dealer only has oil change guys working Saturday and can't replace the plug but allows me to work on the truck myself in a bay, and borrow tools. He let my wife and dog hang out in the sales lobby as it was 95F out. Unfortunately, I got there about 40 minutes before he closed and I couldn't get the plug out before I had to leave.

3. We get a hotel room next to a Tractor Supply and an Advanced Auto Parts. They have everything I need (PB, Freeze stuff, six point sockets, anti seize, dielectric grease, etc.

4. As I'm working on my truck in the sun and 95F heat, some guys from a construction company are setting up a tail gate tent in the parking lot of the hotel so they can BBQ and drink beer and they bring the tent over and put it over my truck. One of the guys is their mechanic and he helps me get the bolt out and then the coil. Basically I wrenched on my LC in a parking lot drinking beer with some cool guys. One was from Jamaica (crazy story, super cool guy).

5. When we get the truck together, there is an amazing Mexican restaurant (I'm in Hutchinson KS!!!, who new??) one block away and we have a great dinner.

While it sucks to brake down on a road trip, the good luck and nice people I ran into made this a pretty good day. Log haul to Durango tomorrow morning. Hoping not to replace more spark plugs!

Often times the journey, especially with hiccups, ends up being the most memorable both good and bad.

I'm sure you'll remember this experience fondly for years to come. It is amazing how a little compassion such as use of a bay, letting a dog stay cool in a building, or stopping to help someone wrench in some created shade can make a lasting impact for someone having an otherwise s***ty day.

I have had a few of these experiences, which haa made me make an emphasis of trying to do similar things for others when I can. One of these for me was over 20 years ago, but it surfaces in my mind quite often.

Glad it worked out for you. Fingers crosses the rest of your trip is hiccup free!

Glad this worked out… and yes, this is all part of the adventure.

Happy to hear things worked out well and you are back up and running. Good call to be prepared and bring an extra coil on the trip. Time for me to pick one up to have as a spare when wheeling.
This will make for one hell of a family adventure story that you will reminisce about in the future. Safe journeys to LCDC and have a blast wheeling.

Great story! Glad it all worked out. See you in Ouray.
