RTH: Blown birf... Still drivable?

UPDATE!!!

Birf is not broken! Problem lies with stripped splines (I think)

That still doesn't explain why neither stub shaft was spinning, though...

Both ends of the axle (diff side and flange side) are very worn on the passenger side.

Has anyone heard of stripping out a spider gear?

One thing to check very carefully, sometimes you just blow the splines of the driveflanges. If so, you scored big time.

I wish that was the case.

I'll get some pics up. Hold tight for a few...

Yeah, I saw an old post about it the other day when i was searching for gear installs. Sorry I don't remember which one. Hopefully that's not your problem.

Oh man that sucks! I've been doing lot's of donuts in my culdesac too. I just live down in Payson and we got almost 2 feet of snow over the last 3 days. Good luck with the wrenching.

Unfortunately I think it might be. I took another look at the axles, and the splines on the differential side are EXTREMELY worn...

Pics (sorry about the crappy quality, they are the best pics I can get...):

Driver side axle (long shaft), differential end

Passenger side axle (short), diff end. Nasty birf soup in the background, thank goodness I have a axle rebuild kit sitting aside...

Stop posting and get wrenching Lane. We need to see some pics dude.

Got 'em for ya. I've been wrenching for the last several hours. :flipoff2:

Lemme see if I can get some better pics. (now, where did my sister hide her camera...)

You don't have to pull it all apart to get at the birf.

Remove caliper
Take off 6 studs on felt seal kit.
Remove 4 nuts holding lower control arm.
Remove 2 bolts holding top trunion bearing.
Remove abs sensor.
Remove end cap and snap ring.
Remove drive flange.
Remove nut, star washe and lock nut.
Pull hub and nuckle as one unit.

Good luck.

camo method... I don't like this when something is wrong because you may not find the issue... I've watched many a mini-truck owner do the above only to STILL have to pull apart the hub for various reasons.

I think Lane has ruled out the flanges though... so me thinks it's in the dif somewhere... spider gear splines or even the ring....

When Catty's (91) transfer went out, the first thing that happened was the drive flange flew off from stripped hub studs... like 30 feet away... so I dropped the front drive shaft to hobble back to camp. then the transfer case's center dif lock gave out climbing outta the trail system... that meant done without a front drive shaft... I think the blown hub was a symptom of the transfer case doing something weird...

Anyway, Lane, I hope yours isn't imploding like that did... I can't wait to see what the problem actually is...

Those are extremely bad pictures :flipoff2: but it does look like the splines are very worn.

Now we're going to have to see pictures of the side gears.

Do you have any friends that know how to take pictures and post them?:flipoff2:

I think you did yourself a favor. That front end was ready to go. You pushed it over the edge and get to fix it now in your garage, rather than out in the backwoods.

LOL! This is almost like we're standing around him heckling him in person... a virtual wrenching party if you will....

time to drain that dif.... got a magnet handy?

Yeah, I have a feeling the diff might have let loose a little....

Eric--you ready to give him the reach around?

I'm enjoying, quite honestly. I've got better pics loading right now, I found a camera with Macro mode. They tell all... And no, I haven't pulled the 3rd yet, though I will when I get a chance (i.e. not tonight).

Dude, I know how to replace spider gears. ;p

Besides, I have a way of making things work on a budget. Not sure how, but I do.

Next post = Hi-quality pics

JEEBUS! I'm rolling!

Lane are you absolutely sure that the sound is not coming from the two midgets wrastlin' in the transfer case?

Behold.... The driver side axle, differential end.

Yes, because it works fine with the CDL. And when I was listening for the grinding, there was no question it was from the front.
