Any suggestions on where to start, I'm going with fuel related. All the details I have for now.

More details are needed. Did it restart? Did you have to do something special to restart it? If engine dies cruise control has little to do with it unless we are dealing with ECM failure.

The vehicle attempts to restart, unsuccessfully though.

I assume no dash lights or odd running or misfiring, just sudden unexplained shut down. No history of engine problems or mods. And it has electrical power to the vehicle. It does seem likely to be fuel pump/fuel pump ecu related.

Here's a long thread on stalling with lots of ideas.

Rough!

Are you able to pull codes?

Could be fuel related which won't have much symptoms and codes to go on. In that area, could be fuel pump, fuel pump ECU as stated earlier, but could just as easily be out of fuel as the fuel sender (float) has been known to go bad and mis-represent the amount of fuel left. How much fuel did you have in the tank, might be worth dumping a few gallons in.

How many miles on the rig?

Thank you everyone. Luckily my wife and our daughters weren't to far from home and I could come grab them quickly from work. We have owned it for almost 8 years. I think it has around 128k miles on it now. I will see if i can find my scanner and will update as I find anything out. I will try and throw a few gallons in it. My wife does regularly test the dash light/fuel sender, and it does appear to be fairly low on gas.

Random question, and be honest….

When you fill up, do you give it a few extra pumps after it clicks off?

If so… I experienced similar behavior with my 2014 Tundra. Would restart after I let it sit overnight

Longgggggg excruciating story short, I have always gave a few clicks after fill and apparently with certain Yotas this fills and saturates the Charcoal canister. Luckily got mine replaced under warranty. And now, I NEVER give extra pumps.

People here have disagreed with me on this, and that’s fine…. But…. Do you give a few extra pumps after it clicks off??

Not normally, I'm sure i have in the past.

:princess::rofl::rofl::rofl: well, it was a very expensive tank of fuel. The low fuel light has stopped working. The gauge reads still, so there is that. After wasting an hour scouring through my garage and stacks of random stash locations of where I might have left my elm wifi obdII plug in, I decided to hit the gas station, dumped a few gallons in. The princess had actually reset the trip odometer and low and behold thought to myself, wow, she got 290 miles out of a tank, the whole tank. Two starter cycles and she fired right up, and I went back to the gas station and put another 22.46 gallons in.

Given all of the issues in this particular stretch of interstate recently I had not really wanted to mess with anything on the shoulder where she ran out of fuel. Chock one up for the tow truck company. :meh:

Thank you for all of the initial help.

Glad the easy answer was the issue.

For repair, as they're going to need to get into the gas tank, I would recommend to replace the whole fuel pump assembly (77020-60342). Which will address the sender, but will also replace the fuel pump which is a known potential issue into higher mileage.

More info here:

I’d bet it shows about 1/4 tank. They always fail around there.

I agree with the above—replace both the pump and fuel level sender (or the whole assembly which includes those things).
