My 1989 FJ62 has 320,000 miles on it now and I have a rough idle issue I can't figure out. It only does it when it completely warms up and it's worse when it's warm outside. After you come to a stop, maybe 4 or 5 seconds it starts to the rough idle. Checked for vacuum leaks, everything is good. Also did a full tune-up and cleaned the air flow meter. After cleaning the AFM, it seems to be worse. Bought a used AFM that was tested as good and it's doing the same thing.

Any ideas what may be causing the rough idle?

Looks like some good info here:

Have you done any of the engine diagnostic tests? Just wondering if that would point you towards O2 sensor, etc…

Good luck! Hoping something simple for you!

not specific advice but make sure coolant sensor not a issue and fuel pressure not an issue.

Appreciate the help. I'm doing some research and I have a really good mechanic trying to help me figure it out. I'll let you know what happens.

Any updates?
Well I took it to a guy and he changed a few things like the idle air control, plugs, checked all the vacuum hoses, cleaned the injectors, cleaned the MAF, basically did a full tune-up plus some other stuff. It seemed to have gotten better and the idle wasn't as rough but it's started missing pretty bad last week while under a load. It's running rich, I can smell it when it's idling and when you take off it's like it was trying to clear out and when it did, it ran better, until you came to a stop, after maybe 10 seconds, it would start the rough idle again and you can smell gas. Once you take off it would be bogged down and then it would lean out and run good again. Now it's like it can't get back to to that. When you push the gas pedal, it wants to bog down. I took it back to him yesterday and he feels like now that it's doing it all the time, it will be easier to find. I'm hoping he'll get it, seems its been in the shop since I bought it back in August.

Rubber Intake hoses in good shape with no cracks?

Have you actually verified fuel pressure with an actual fuel pressure gauge and watched it while driving?

Those would be the first two things we would look at before any of the other things you did.

You said it’s running rich, how have you verified that? Have you put a AFR gauge on or are you reading the spark plugs?

Tried all that. My buddy bought a fuel injector tester and one of the injectors was barley flowing at idle speed. It was basically dripping. I ordered injectors yesterday, going to replace all of them. They're all original so I'm hoping this cures all or most of my idle issues.

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow but my mechanic says it runs like a totally different vehicle after putting the new injectors in. I wished I had tested them first, would have saved a lot of money and time but those things are tough to track down sometimes. I'll post this weekend after I pick it up and let you know how it's going. He said he drove it about 50 miles and it ran as smooth as a 3FE can run with 300,000 miles on it. I was seriously considering an engine swap, hopefully this will get me to stop thinking about that. It's probably easier to swap in an LS but I just can't do it. To me the perfect engine would be a 1UZ-FE but I just read a thread about a guy doing that and he actually bought an 80 series that had been swapped with the 1UZ-FE and replace the body with his FJ62 after cutting the frame to fit it. Looks like just doing the engine swap would take a lot of money and time so it wouldn't be worth it. I had thought about swapping with a 1fz fe, seems it would be the easiest but I haven't found much information about people doing that so maybe it's a lot more involved than what I thought. I just can't put a General Motors engine in a Toyota but I'm sure an LS swap would be the easiest way to go since you can by most of the parts to convert it. Just seems wrong but that's me.

I drove it all day today and she runs like she has 50 more horses. I guess I didn't realize how bad it was running before. Going to the paint shop in 2 weeks for a little rust repair and some paint work. The paint still looks great so I'm hoping he can color match it, would rather not paint the whole body. I need a new carpet kit and some sound deadening material, other than that, need to figure out what to do about the lose steering. After that, I'm just going to enjoy it. My chiropractor, that I've been going to on and off since 1986, bought this Cruiser new from Morristown Toyota and I've always admired it. I tried to buy it when he decided to sell it about 4 years ago but the price wasn't right. He's sold it to a local anesthesiologist that didn't really have an appreciation for Cruisers and he put a for sale sign in the window at a local repair shop. I was lucky enough to be at the right place, at the right time and got a heck of a deal on it. It's a good thing because it's taken more than I figured to get it baselined and back in good running condition. I've probably owned a dozen Cruisers over the years but my first one in 1993 was a 1983 FJ60 so the 60 series has always been my favorite. My wife knows I've always wanted an FJ40 and the other day she told me she didn't care if I buy a 40 but the white 62 ain't going no where. I didn't think she even cared but today she asked me if she could drive it to work this week. I always knew I married the right woman ;)

That’s great.
Mine still isn’t sold on my 40 after 18yrs of marriage. But I had the truck before her. Lol.

Great you got all your 3FE items sorted.
