If you all were going to replace rotors would you just go with the OEM Toyota ones or would you upgrade to a slotted rotor(just slotted not drilled)?

IIRC, there is a 100-series rotor upgrade that most recommend. Been a while, so maybe it was just pads I was thinking of. Surely the wagon gurus will chime in shortly.

I *believe* that the 100 series pads are an upgrade for the 80 series trucks, not the rotors.

I wouldn't bother upgrading to slotted rotors. More expense without much benefit. I'd go OEM if you can afford it, but I'd bet that Autozone brand would work just fine.

the "upgrade" is 100 series pads on 80 series rotors..... for fronts only. More surface area so they last longer, no real performance upgrade.

OEM is a great option and don't think the slotted is warranted on these trucks
rotors seem run the gamut from 20 each to 200 each. Something of good quality in the middle should do. For slotted thepowerslots avail at sled and 360 performance from duiser off road and there is even one set of front non slotted brembos left on rock auto for 55 ea

Id advise against the chinese big box store rotors like az and oreillys as I've heard numerous tales of them warping prematurely on these heavy pigs

Yeah, run far away from the big box auto stores, didn't we all learn a lesson from tommy boy? Lifetime guarantee doesn't mean you won't have to replace those parts more often than oem. For fun, I bought the standard, middle and high grade brake rotors from a big box to put on my tacoma. Put them on a brake lathe and let's just say I didn't have a set that didn't need turning before putting them on. Back in the box and to the store, never do that again. Brembo or OEM has always been solid for me.

Big box store rotors while pretty good for regular cars aren't good for heavy vehicles or high performance cars.

OEM is good but $$$ Brembo blanks are just as good and normally can be had for 50-60 on tirerack.com

No real need for slotted and drilled on these rigs.

I've had good luck with AutoZone rotors on my truck. She only weighs 6000# and occassionally tows another 5-6000# :meh:

Can't go wrong with OEM either way.

Interesting thread. I just PM'ed Beno about the cost of 80 series rotors front and back. From my research, NAPA premium rotors are made by the same manufacturer that makes the OEM rotors. Whichever is cheaper is who I'm going with.

Like others have said, avoid slotted and/or drilled rotors. They are typically more expensive and the heat cycling can cause cracking at the slots/holes. The ONLY slotted rotors that should be purchased are cyro treated rotors but that is for a entirely different application.

While OEM/NAPA Premium, mid-grade, and economy rotors all have the same thickness and dimensions, the OEM rotors have more mass, better steel, and are heavier than the others. Rotor can swing wildly in weight difference but the rule of thumb is heavier is better for large vehicles like ours.

Jonathan, Let me know what the price is on the rotors OEM. I'm gonna look into the Brembo. I tend to lean towards OEM most of the time these days because I feel like each oem part I replace is one step closer to the whole truck being OEM again!

Although I had an OEM brake master go out after less than 2000 miles which really irritated me

From my research, NAPA premium rotors are made by the same manufacturer that makes the OEM rotors.

Do you have any links for this?

I have yet to find any indication that the NAPA Premiums are from the OEM suppliers (Aichi Steel Corporation). I have not seen the "infinity" stamp trademark that is indicative of Aichi Steel on the NAPA rotors.

Not doubting, just would like to see the research (non-MUD... :) )

I overhauled my brakes with napa calipers (the AAA discount is insane) and brakeperformance slotted rotors. It's been more then a year and no warping. Does it stop? Teeth in dashboard if I really get on it.
