Hi All, I recently swapped my '84 bj60 front axle with an '86 hj60 axle. Can anyone tell me if the oem ring and pinion ratios are the same in both axles? I don't want to install drive shaft until i know for sure they're the same and i admit i don't understand anything with diff ratios. thx so much
 
Check the the outside of the pumkin to see if there is a tag. That will tell you the ratio. You could also call Spector off road tech line and ask that question

Not likely on a Toy axle.

Regor, the diffs shoudl be the same, but different markets got different stuff. What we got and what you happened to get may be different. So we do not have a quick answer for ya. Sorry amigo.
 
i got an idea,engage your hubs and drive for a bit first to make sure they are engaged, take some string and form a loop between the front pinion where you connect the driveshaft, and the transfer case, then drive it in a straight line (in 4wd) for 50 feet or so, if the ratio is different it will be twisted up. if not it will be about the same.

Well in the event that one ratio is 3.70 and the other is 4.11 that could create quite the bind on the drive train and possibly ruin some expensive items.....




You would not find me doing this.

It took me a second too, but I think he is talking about keeping the front driveshaft out and performing this.

If it were me I would spin the pinion flange and count how many times it rotates to turn the front wheels one revolution. Assuming both wheels are off the ground with the hubs locked and both wheels spinning the same. If the pinion turns about 4 1/10 times it is a 4.10 gear ratio, but if it turns about 3 3/4 times it is a 3.70 gear ratio.
