Finally got around to addressing some cooling system issues. For a while, Righty has had a minor coolant leak that I finally tracked down to the water pump weeping. Ordered a new one from @cruiseroutfit with all the associated gaskets as well as an 82C thermostat (had an 88C thermostat installed). While I was in there, I pulled the fan clutch and swapped to 15000 CST oil in hopes of getting more airflow. If that wasn't enough, I threw in a new temperature sending unit I had on the shelf for good measure. Fingers cross this solves my engine temp issues...

After concluding there were no leaks, I went over to the closest dirt I could find (a local housing development) and messed around

After getting Righty's cooling system refreshed a bit, it was finally time for pyrometer and boost gauges. Went with ISSPRO EV2 after reading good reviews here and because I wanted something that would work with 24V.

Struggled with the decision over where to place the EGT probe. Laziness won out and I drilled and tapped post-turbo.

Not the most elegant mounting solution, but given someone had already used double sided tape on the side of the dash and I had 2" PVC pipe and my own roll of double sided tape laying around...

For some time, Righty has had an annoying coolant leak coming from somewhere near the firewall. After a mix of procrastination and denial, I finally got back there with a mirror and found a leak at the seam of the head and the block. Ouch. Off comes the head.

With some encouragement (and parts) from @beno tear down has officially begun.

Next morning I had a closer look at the head gasket and am pretty confident I found the source of the coolant leak

It is worth noting that the valve stem seals that come OEM on the 3B and 13B-T heads from the factory do NOT look like the replacement valve stem seals from Toyota. (90913-02051) But do not despair! The replacement ones are the correct ones and they fit. You can see the differences here.

I almost s*** a brick when Jeff sent the pic with the differences (and the head at the machine shop) and I had to figure out WTF was going on.

You can see the old factory ones on the right and the new replacement OEM on the left. It's odd because the EPC shows no supersession of part numbers whatsoever and to have a difference in structure like this was odd to me.

In any event, all is good.

Continuing to make progress.

Dropped in the new head gasket which is a very different composition from the original

Bolted up the exhaust manifold and plugged in the injectors

Muscled all that into place and started bolting it down with new lightly oiled head bolts and following the sequence in the FSM.

Went to bolt the rocker shaft into place and ran into trouble. It seems the machine shop mixed up some bolts and gave me two longer than the others I'd given them.

While thinking about a solution for the bolts, I bolted up the turbo and intake manifold.

Next up:

1. Buy enough beer to get @beno and I through the list below
2. Get the right bolts for the rocker assembly
3. Connect the injector lines
4. A long list of misc nuts and bolts and a longer list of vacuum lines and other bits
5. Add coolant and oil
6. Valve adjustment
7. Fire it up!
 
my truck, at the minute, waits for the radiator to come back from a repair shop( radiators factory prototype/repairs unit). Although I only though I have some minor leak on the radiator lid, shop told me the radiator efficiency was only 50-60%, therefore they went ahead and replaced all the cells. no idea how radiator efficiency is measured, just glad I sent it!

given the similar age of our trucks and your previous overheating issues, maybe checking radiator is a good call too.
my next try is to put the 88 deg thermostat in, although it will he a high flow 88 one for sure.

I had to replace my radiator with an ADRAD unit from Australia recently. Not an easy part to get for my FJ73 but thanks to @Billyfj7312ht , he made it possible. My old radiator was not cooling that well so I do agree that checking the radiator is very important with any cruiser when you buy it. Especially from South American countries like Colombia where they remove the thermostat and just run tap water in them.

100% of my cooling system is less than 2 years old now. Every single part has been replaced at various times over the past two years with the radiator being last part replaced.
 
Long time reader, first time poster. I am in California and always wanted a RHD diesel Cruiser. In the process of buying one, but do not have a unlimited time nor want to risk not being able to register in in CA.

PerroBravo, if it is not too much to ask, how fat was the fat check you had wrote to the DMV?..

Typically, tax and title in CA are about 10% of purchase price that you list on the transfer papers. Make sure the diesel cruiser you are buying has a current title from CA or another state as you cannot bring them in to CA direct from overseas. Once in CA, if it has out of state title, i would have AAA or a registered VIN verifier fill out the Reg 31 form that you need to take to DMV. Make sure that they note the vehicle is diesel and not gas.

Finally, Righty is back on the road!

After solving the rocker assembly bolt length mystery (by going to the shop and getting the original bolts), I was able to bolt up the rockers, put the valve cover back on, thread the injector lines back into place, replace the bad manual priming pump (which caused me a lot of grief when I ran this thing out of fuel a while back), top off fluids, cross fingers, and finally twist the key.

Everything buttoned back up...even put on a shiny new oil fill cap @beno sent!

A quick drive around the neighborhood didn't reveal any issues, so Righty rejoined the herd in the afternoon sun

Took Righty on a test run up a local mountain and I'm pretty excited to report that everything went very well. No leaks, no temperature issues, nothing but good times.

Added some dust on top of the greasy remnants of the head gasket work

I am also sorry to hijack your thread, and if anyone has any questions about this please PM me, but I would be very careful here if I were you. I just moved to CA from North Carolina with an "85 Hilux Surf diesel. I know, not a 70-series but it's the same idea. Despite having a valid out-of-state title (almost 18 months old btw), I'm currently being told that I can't register or title my truck here without the Toyota Letter. Still trying to sort it out but I did a lot of homework before coming here, had the right section of the CFR ready, all my forms, VIN verification, etc. and am still being stonewalled. Not sure if this is a recent thing but just want to warn folks. Again, sorry to bring this up in the wrong thread.
