Gappy,

you posted the same time as me ! The family top came from SOR and is designed for the FJ40 and on the 40 it covers the full length of the truck. On mine, you can see it only covers 90%. It has a windshield channel and ties to the footman loops in the rear. SOR offers another model with two screen openings in the roof (for more cash). I think I paid somehwere around $235, but don't quote me on it. SOR is never cheap. After I bought it, I found two on Mud. I think they both sold for around $135. It looks like they come up every once in awhile. It comes in tan (camo on the inside) or black.
Hope this helps.

yeah yeah I know my camera is broken.....

I will be home at about 4pm. If you want to come by thats fine. I need to lift out the cage and finish weld it.

I like SOR's digital camo. I don't care for the 2 openings, just another reason for the sun to sneak in and burn my bald head. I bought the black family top at TPI for I think $70. (also got a cool "LC Crossing" sign).

Sweet ride rhart! I hope to see it in person some day. Maybe the CTJ '09 at the Cliffs?

You obviously have that bender figured out John. I guess the earliest I'll have the chance to see Gumby's rig will be at the Jambo as well.

Hi Guys,

John worked all night on this thing and moved a little further along. Although the pictures don't show it (too dark by that time), the cage is painted as well. I have attached a link to some photos of the rig with the hardtop on as well as the cage.

SmugMug Photo Sharing. Your photos look better here. <---------------- LINK

Coulda swore I saw your rig last Monday on I-55, but it was awful far north for you. Had a lawn tractor in the back.

That was us. Funny thing is my brother is unfortunately in forclosure and getting devorced and I got custody of the lawn tractor.

Close ups for the roll cage mounts

Hello guys,

Great rig, I'm currently in the process of building mine and designing a roll cage these days, and was wondering about the placings of the mounts. I was thinking of going through the tub in the rear and mount on the chassis and probably do the same for the mid and front.

Can you please take some close ups of the mounts?

I plan on keeping the original soft top with its bows. Will also make my own roof rack pretty close in looks and ideas with the ARB. I will have my roof rack mounts going through the soft top, and using a big washer and nut on each of the 6 RR mounts we seal the soft top again. Then on top of that we bolt on the roof rack. Still thinking of better solutions to make things easier if I want to get her naked :)
I will be putting up the design on my build thread soon.

Thanks in advance

This cage is mounted to the body with bolts and a backing plate on the under side. Going to the frame wouldnt have been too hard, but since this truck is not really for wheeling then the body mount is fine. Plus IIRC woody's 40 is a body mounted cage and he has rolled dozens of times, with no real problems....though a little birdie told me that isnt the case as of late. :D

I was going to say that going through the soft top for the roof rack will be next to impossible to keep from leaking, short of having maybe large washers mouted on the cage for the top to sit on and be smashed to (kinda like you said) .....but then I saw where you are located. I doubt you are too concerned with water tightness.

Rod (the owner of the truck) is rarely on the boards, so I suggest pm'ing or emailing him, and telling him to check this thread.

Tub

Thanks 4RNR, I msgd Rod.

I will still research going through the body and the effects of a cage that is too stiff. Putting in mind I plan on loading the roof rack with max. 300 KG

How much weight do you think the Tub can handle in a small area, say with a 5x5 inch plate on the mounts?:hhmm:

There, have look

im not sure it matters. Its just too easy to join the 2 rear up-rights of the cage (B and C pillar up-rights) with one piece of angle iron or plate as the mount for both up-rights, in place of 2 seperate 5x5 plates. With that much of the load spread evenly across the inner wheel well, you should be fine with a loaded rack or a "normal roll over".

Keep in mind if you mount the cage to the body and the frame, you negate the purpose of the body mounts to flex and dampen vibrations. Not that a 40 is a smooth or quiet vehicle...its something to keep in mind.

EDIT: I just saw that you said the "middle" mount (b-pillar area) will be on the floor and not the wheel well. I would still spead the load across the wheel well with angle iron. If you can, you can consider running a tube as a 45* gusset (couple feet long) running from the middle of the back upright to the forward area of the wheel well and connect it to the larger mounting plate.

Im not sure if any of that sounds like it sounds in my head..... :D

After reading what you wrote 3 times, I got your point.

I plan on having 45 gussets in many places. I just dont want to eat up my usefull roll up windows on each side of the soft top. So it will be more smaller gussets. You will be the first to see the design as soon as I scan it.

For about $1.50 ginger will hop on a plane and build you a cage to your specs with his steel.

He hasn't figured out how to build a cage without spending more money than he makes.

Just don't anyone tell him.

Its true

I wish I had more time to be on the boards. In fact I wish I was in the States enough to be on the board! I can certainly take some pics of the mounts but it will be a little while. I will be out of town for a little while and may not be back until just before Thanksgiving (11/24). If you can hold off, I will post some pics. If you need pics of anything else in particular, just email (or post) and I can get those as well.

I believe John has already given you some quick ideas/impressions. Although most people don't listen to him, he does have a good idea every once in awhile, and if you talk to him when he's sober, he can even articulate them. He did all the work/fabrication on my roll cage, I just supplied the truck.

As far as the mounts, as John has already said, mine is mounted to the body (no intentions of off-roading - or weight capacity concerns), you might want to look into going to the frame to better suit your personal needs.

I'll get you the pics as soon as I can.
