Switching gears a bit, I've been pondering sound. Having a good stereo and speakers are fairly low priority in the grand scheme of things. Nonetheless...

I think I want to replace the door panels and remove those speakers. I guess those were original?

I've searched MUD and seen a variety of ideas for speakers. Many are speaker boxes mounted in the rear, behind the seats, or in the far back corners.

Others are marine grade can speakers mounted to the roll cage in various positions.

I like the idea of mounting on the cage. If I can find something that fits the 4+ cage, this could be a nice solution.

Has anyone explored these options?

While your at it you should install a 74 style hatch rear door. Then taking the top on and off you dont have to mess with taking off the ambulance doors and installing the barn doors. I would do the to my 76 but want to keep it stock.

From experience trying to come up with the rubber and parts for the hatch rear lid is getting hard to find,I should know since I have one :)

Yeh, that thought occurred to me. I'll add that to my "maybe later" list.

dont think those are stock speakers in the doors. certainly not a 78. the one speaker was mounted under the dash on the passenger side i believe.

my plan for audio when i get around to it is:
-wakeboard tower style speakers. easily removable. fits a range of OD roll bars depending on make. also all weather resistant
-if i can find a decent amp small enough, i will mount to the firewall up in the dash somewhere. with my emission computer gone, one could fit there. if not, on standoffs under the drivers seat.
-4th gen ipod shuffle (the one with touch screen and FM receiver) 5th gen ipod nano used on ebay, built in fm receiver. velcro'd to an alum bracket mounted in the stock radio hole.

maybe those ideas trip your trigger.

I like your thinking. I'm not so much a fan of those speakers, though it would absolutely work. And probably sound better too.

It occurred to me last week that my baby brother works in Denver selling car audio systems to dealerships, and he might be able to help out. It's not that I don't ever think about my brother, but I sometimes forget what he's doing for work. He's reliable and a good guy, it's just that has changed jobs often since....well, since he was born. I think some people have more of a wandering path through life that doesn't go high school, college, family, career, retirement...blast off.

I sent him the relevant specs for the cage and he's working up ideas. Cage is 49" between the bars, and the bars are 2" outside diameter.

Maybe something like these wedges would even work. I prefer something flush to the cage rather than hanging down.

Not really that high on my list anyway. It's something to noodle on while I pass the time waiting for Mike to work on the engine. Speaking of which, I should write that update now.

Check out the YouTube video for the 1977 resto Icon did. They designed a cool speaker enclosure to use in the back corners of stock FJ40s. Might be something you would be interested in.

While I spent my time installing the amazing Fishman Ellipse Blend pickup in my Taylor ( pics: https://it.thislife.com/ibtr4q4c ) ...Mike was able to get a compression test done. w00t!

Now we know better what we're dealing with.

From @Mechnizer:

First off, the engine was missing the valve adjusters so I acquired some and rebuilt the rocker arm valve train assembly. Compression was low, average total was 75 lbs, stock OEM is 149 lbs. Leak down test shows 40 percent loss at rings. Oil pressure is at a steady 55 lbs with a drill and rotating assembly with starter to simulate a running engine.

Thus follows the teardown to determine what's causing the loss.

Valve guides are worn to the point of oil usage causing a few valves to have an excessive amount of carbon build up. Some of the blow by was going past the rings. After complete tear down I can see why the rings had not only been carbon-ed up badly due to burning oil, but after sitting an undetermined time they have collapsed.

The cam has three lobes that have started going bad, and a few lifters show the same kind of wear.

The cylinder head is at the machine shop getting an inspection, and a complete valve grind and surface.

Makes perfect sense now why the PO had started tearing down the engine. I'm sure as he told me it ran before he started the project, but it must have been pretty darn weak!

For now, on to body work. The axles are temporarily reattached and Hank is back in the garage. If it ever rains in Phoenix (what, 2 weeks out of the year?) now would be ok by me.

I haven't posted any updates for several weeks. Here we go...

Body work, body work, more body work
  • metal cut out and replaced in the floor board and around the transmission cover
  • bed surface and underside received a couple coats of with POR-15
  • wheel well fenders replaced
  • secondary tank spout hole filled - not using it

From @Mechnizer re: the rear fender repair:

Several techniques have been suggested while doing this kind of body work.

In order to keep warping to the minimum the technique I use is to splice both panels with a minimum gap of atleast the width of the metal being used "18 gauge".

The first row of tacks is completed with several clamps holding the line straight.

Using a cut of wheel all the tacks are leveled just before the surface, using just 80 grit sanding disc will over heat the area causing war-page.

After the use of the cut off wheel an 80 grip sanding disc is used to completely level area.

A body hammer and dolly are used to straighten warpage due to tack heat.

I use a fat marker to trace the areas of the splice not yet tacked making it easier to see with helmet on.

After metal surface is cooled to room temp another group of tacks are welded on right after each present tack.

Allowing metal to cool until room temp and then using the cut off wheel and 80 grit wheel to level tacks and once again using body hammer and dolly to level any warpage.

This is a tedious task and takes a while but the results are worth the work.

We're about 2/3 into where we thought we'd be, so it's time to take stock of what remaining parts we have and what we need to buy. At this point still hoping and expecting to wrap this up before the end of June.

Still seems like a ways to go. Does it all come together quickly in the end? We shall see.
