Replacing the Fuel Pump Sock/Strainer

This site has been so invaluable for all things pertaining to Land Cruisers--I just wanted to explain what I did to replace this fuel pump sock as a little 'pay it forward' gesture. Big thanks to mercfan and his post: How to replace your fuel sock filter

I apologize in advance for the massive pictures.

1) Disconnect the battery and remove the gas cap to release pressure.

2) Below are the necessary parts I used:

I also used 8 new washers and screws from Home Depot:

3) Remove the middle seats. There are 4 x 14mm bolts that needed to be removed for each seat. The 2 bolts in the rear are accessed after folding the seats up and removing the plastic covers. I used a plastic spludger, but a flat head screwdriver can also be used.

4) Remove the side trim and plastic foot step. The front seats do NOT have to be removed. the carpet can be removed from the rear where it meets the third row/cargo area.

5) Remove 3 screws and gently pry the metal cover, which may be stuck due to the thin foam insulation.

This is what you will see...years of crud. Clean it the best you can and use compressed air to get rid of the grime, dirt, and rust.

6) Disconnect the rubber hose and connector. Then using a 17mm socket, remove the banjo bolt.

There will be 2 washers that will be replaced. Don't reuse these parts.

I had to use new screws and washers because they were corroded.

7) Move the rubber hose and connections to the side and CAREFULLY remove the entire pump assembly. You may have to twist 30 degrees each way to remove, but take care not to not to bend the float wire or your gauge will be incorrect. Also, the rubber gasket is seated with the help of 3 rubber prongs that attach thru the back plate. One broke off during removal due to old age. Make sure nothing drops into the fuel tank.

8) Remove the rubber gasket. I just cut it off with scissors since you will replace it anyways. Turn your attention to the bottom of the fuel pump where the sock/strainer is. Remove the rubber gasket and retaining clip. The old one is black, but the new retaining clip is silver. Gently remove the sock/strainer.

9) Installing the new sock/filter was the hardest part. Brute force didn't work, and I didn't want to break the plastic, so I lubed the area with a little Marvel's Mystery Oil (something compatible with gasoline) and took an 8oz ball-peen hammer and gently tapped it on. Secure with the new (silver) retaining washer. Install the new rubber gasket. Sorry no picture, but it only attaches one way because the little rubber prongs will match to specific holes on the back plate.

10) Replace the black rubber retainer, and gently place back into the the fuel tank. You will have to wiggle and finagle it a bit, but it will seat properly. Replace the 8 screws. I used 6 washers--2 were not used for the metal mounts because I wanted there to be enough thread to secure them. Reinstall the banjo bolt with the new washers (I read it should be tightened to 22 ft/lbs, but I did not do this), reconnect the electrical connector and rubber hose (don't forget the metal fastener!), and install the cover lid.

11) Connect the battery and turn on the vehicle to make sure it works--it will because I have faith in you! Reinstall the carpet, trim, plastic side steps, and seats. Congratulations, you're done!
