Last week the v-belt running the water pump and smog/air pump on my 1984 FJ60 melted because one of the pumps seized. I think it's the smog/air pump and am ordering a new one from Napa. If someone here has changed one before, I just wanted to ask if it's an easy job or not? My mechanical skills are moderate.

its a PITA but straight forward.

Just did this last weekend, and it is a pain, but pretty straightforward. Took me about an hour with medium skills.

Be careful that the part you get from Napa is the same pump that you took off. I tried to get a pump from Napa a few months ago and all they had was a different pump with rubber hoses to adapt it to the land cruiser. I went someplace else and got one that was the original configuration (see my thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/265429-siezed.html)

Be careful taking off the air hoses. If they are brittle and you break them, they are very expensive to replace.

I find it helpful to remove most of the air hoses, and to unmount the power steering pump to move it out of the way. I leave the hoses connected to the PS pump, but there is enough slack to push it forward so you can get at the air pump Other than that it is pretty easy.

Did it seize because the power steering pump is leaking fluid onto it?

My power steering hasn't worked for the past 3-4 years. I ordered a new PS pump at the same time as the air pump and will replace both at the same time. I read the thread about PS pump failure leading to air pump failure already.

Don't forget there is the a small bushing that the lower bolt goes through on the back end of the bracket. Don't lose it or you'll have a hard time getting it to line up properly.

Damn! That explains a lot. No wonder I had such a PITA! :o
