I am rebuilding my knuckles and I am thinking about the brass bushings in the knuckles - they are original with 180k on the truck.

Is it difficult to do without damaging the new bushing?

Do I need the SST to do it right?

How much play is ok between the shaft and the bushing? (I guess I should look at the FSM on that one)

FSM is vague on what wear is. What makes you think it is overly worn, my diesel has 320K miles on original bushings....

But you should be able to R & R the old one with minimal tools, remove it with a drift and you should be able to tap it the new one with a bushing driver (they are cheap)

tony is right on the money once again.......

the bushings should only "wear" when the cruiser is in 4wd. so it all depends on how much it's been driven in 4wd. i doubt they're bad. but they are fairly simple to replace.

I have only seen a few over the years that ever needed to be replaced. I have replaced some just because the person wanted them done. Now, spindle bearings on the front end of old chevy solid front axles need to be checked / grease / replaced more often from my personal experience. Alot of people out there do not even know they exist in those axles it seems.

I am thinking of replacing because I am rebuilding FJ62 knuckles to go into my 40. Those knuckles came out of a junkyard and are with an unknown mileage/maintenance history.

I will slide an axle/birf in there and see what they look like.

I have never replaced these, but I've read you might have to hone the new ones if they're tight? And/or check the centering of the axle with the niffty SST ... Maybe the guys who have done this can chime in on that ...

They should have some faint rifling inside. I would think that if it's still all intact you're probably fine.

Finally did the swap... tested the extraction on one of the spindles that came out of the 40 knuckle... brass bushing came out with a couple of firm taps from the inside with a round punch. Easy PEasy!

Moved to the ones in the 62 knuckles and NO WAY were those guys coming out without a fight. I ended up cutting into them with a dremel to get them to loosen their grip. DESTROYED them getting them out (they are trash anyway but this was WAY more carnage than the ones from the 40)

Anyway, new ones went in with little drama... all new and pretty. Probably wouldn't have made a bit of difference but... "while I was in there..."

Does anyone have a picture of these?

Here you go....

Mark, make sure the axle doesn't fit too tight now. not Idea on these bushings, but a lot of times bushings that are pressed in like that need to be honed after fitting to get the ID opened up properly. Just don't throw it together and go kinda thing.

The FSM doesn't mention that but I will check it out on reassembly.

Thanks
