Greetings all!
For those 62 owners who have rusted out mufflers or broken tail pipes (like mine) never fear you can replace them yourselves.
I purchased the following:
Walker 40076 quiet flow muffler
Walker 41492 mid pipe
Walker 46678 tail pipe
Dynomax performance clamp 35336 2.25"
Dynomax performance clamp 35335 2"
Exhaust gasket sheet (steel core surrounded by graphite)

I had to cut the muffler flange free from the Y pipe on the truck because big surprise had rusted in place.
After that it was a matter of fitting the pieces together. Easiest to mount the tail pipe first then fit the muffler, then the mid pipe. It might work different for different folks. 2" clamp in the mid pipe flange the muffler and 2.25" clamp on the muffler to tailpipe joint.
Now the FJ is nice and quiet.
It looks good and works well and I didn't even know what in the hell I was doing.

This post is useless without pictures!

Useless? Maybe, but only for those too lazy to do a part # search. The rest is self explanatory, even for those who have never done this before. It will in fact only fit together one way and one way only, clamps and all. For those of you who need pictures...

What was the total cost of the parts, and where did you buy them?

I bought all the same stuff and then some (y-pipe, some stuff to delete the cats, o-sensors) from the big online parts place. Don't recall the total but it wasn't that bad.

Depending on price of those parts(looks like $150+-), the OEM muffler and tailpipe may be another option, think it was under $200, had dealer install for maybe another $100 as that gets a lifetime warranty

@Saucerman no laziness. Just used to forum members showing pictures of the finished product on their truck. Glad the instal went well.

Oh Comet, it's cool. I just didn't think anyone would want to see my ugly old FJ with a new exhaust. I know you aren't lazy by any stretch, been following your Buster Brown post for a while.
I think this weekend I will put some pictures.
I was refraining from naming the place I purchased the parts because I recently became aware that vendors are big supporters of the forum and did not want to step on any toes.
But yes, price indeed was in the $200 range.
I am also going to get rid of the cats soon. I will post pics and parts list for that too if it works like I want it too.
Later Ya'll.

Great post Saucerman. Have you had any luck finding a "Y" pipe? I've looked high and low on exhaust system sites and have yet to find any. Same goes for the two front down pipes coming off the exhaust manifold.

Greetings 88Retired62! Yes indeed I found a Y pipe. That is on my next exhaust project which will be the cat elimination.
The part # is Walker 40210.

I haven't found the exhaust manifolds, but I haven't been looking for those either as mine are nothing fancy, but they are working okay.
Good luck!

I got my walker QF muffler from summit. when I got mine, the center pipe and tailpipe were listed as 4-6 weeks out and I skipped them- my old ones wer'ent too bad- just the muffler laid down inside itself...I got calcats at the same time, and got my free shipping for over $100...the muffler is GREAT; think it was <80 bucks by itself...

Wondering how the dealer can life time warranty anything, as most of these parts will surely be discontinued in a few years. Toyota probably never expected to have people drive these cars forever.

When did you buy this?

I bought it a little over 3 weeks ago. A local muffler shop also had the ability to order the parts. It arrived well within the 14 day time frame I was allotted for delivery.

I checked last year and was still available. Mine had rusted the tailpipe and muffler from being parked outside in Phoenix during winter. Would have bought the new OEM except someone gave a good one off a 60 series that cost a couple bucks to adapt. The inlet pipe and flange were still good. I was able to get the two nut/bolts apart on the flange but installed new. Kept the inlet off the 60 series. Bought a new OEM muffler for my 79 FJ40. The three bolt flange from the 60 series will be used to replace where a PO had a muffler shop cut out the flange and direct weld in a aftermarket muffler/tailpipe. So no part of the 60 series muffler/tailpipe will go to waste.

They will probably install the one in this thread once OEM are gone. Bought mine in 1993 and have no plan to sell it. Parked in a insulated garage in a mild climate. It will be around longer than I am.

What did you use the sheet material for? Splain it to me Ricky! :) I need all this stuff and have it ready to order but the sheet material has me at a loss...

It sounds like he made his own gaskets for the bolt together sections such as the mid pipe forward.

I ordered the muffler and tail pipe. They look awesome but the tail is a very tight fit with my rear bumper. My engine is out so I only have the muffler and tail pipe on right now. Hoping it fits better when I get the front hooked up.
