Replaced entire starter or just contacts? (1 Viewer)

I had the contacts replaced at the dealer. They were something like $20 plus labor (big bucks). The way I saw it, if the contacts were not done right, then the dealer workmanship was guaranteed too. I would only be paying once. A new starter was, as Spresso put it, aftermarket and hundreds of dollars and the remans were out of the question for me, as their lifespan is shortened before you install. In fact the reman may have simply been new contacts and cleaning. As I understand it, the act of replacing the contacts is pretty simple, once you get to the starter.

That was about 80,000 miles ago.

Not sure about the UZJ100, but on my LS400 I replaced the contacts only because it was so much more work to replace the whole starter. Worked no problem.

If it is as hard to get to the two starter mounting bolts on the UZJ as on my LS, I would just leave it in place.

I pulled mine off and had a starter shop rebuild it cost me $40 ... Spent more on beer and band aids
