Replace spring u-bolts when adding degree shims?

Are leaf springs U-Bolts reusable?

  • Yes. Use them over and over until the world ends.

  • No. Using them more than once will certainly end in a fiery ball of death and destruction.

Hi.
I've run searches for this question, and have found arguments on both sides.
Are spring u-bolts are one-time use items, and should never be torqued more than once?
Or, are they fine to use, loosen, re-tighten . . . over and over?

I'm in the process of correcting caster angles by installing shorter shackles and adding axle shims.
What's your thought? Should I replace the u-bolts while when adding shims?

Thanks for your advise.

Obviously, you've done some research and have seen the arguments on both sides. I personally have done both - went with new and re-used them. I've never had a problem either way. I think the bigger issue is to remember to re-torque them a couple of times after you install them. I've seen far more issues with that than with reused u-bolts breaking.

I've re-used them when I didn't know better and had no issues. I found out about the one time use last year while installing new rear springs. I found a spring shop 20 minutes from home that made them to order while I waited. Took less than ten minutes. Plain steel so I had to paint them. I like the plated ones but figured my axle and springs aren't plated so these were quick, cheap and easy. And the right way also I guess.
