I have replaced the tie rod ends already and have not taken it in for an alignment. I am wondering if I should replace the drag links. I called and they want $100 for each one from Toyota. It looks like I have some slop in my gearbox.

What should I look for in deciding to replace the drag links?
Where is a good place to buy some?

When i replaced the tie rods they looked straight.

Thanks

If they look straight I would not really worry about them...Save 50 bucks and do the alignment yourself(its rather easy)...But if you decide to replace your Tie Rod just order one TRE from toyota and it will come with a Tie Rod for free, as for the drag link (that goes from the pass side TRE to the pitman arm)...As I said above if it looks good I would not bother with it..You might just have to buy that seperate, but you could talk to C-Dan and he would be able to tell ya...Plus he could give ya the IH8MUD discount.

good luck,

If you are trying to eliminate all of the slop in the steering system, be prepared to replace or R&R all of the components that comprise the sytem, i.e. all tie rod & drag link ends, the power steering gear box, and the knuckles. Loose wheel bearings can also contribute to play/vibration/shimmy in the steering so don't overlook those as well.

You might try adjusting your drag links first, but keep in mind that if your tie rods ends (TRE'S) needed to be replaced, your drag link ends probably need to be too. Adjusting the drag link ends is as simple as pulling the cotter pin on the castle nut, cranking down the adjusting screw on the end until it is tight, then backing it off approximately 1.25-1.5 turns, replacing the cotter pin with a new one, and the job is done.

Replacing your P/S gear box with a quality rebuild will definately help your play issues as well, especially if it is showing signs of wear, i.e. leaking, excessive play, etc...

I have alreay rebuilt both knuckles and replaced all wheel bearings. The tie rods have been replaced too. I replaced all four ends of the two steering bars. I am guessing I have a lot of slop in the the gearbox. How hard is the gearbox to rebuild? I need to back off the nuts 1.25-1.5 turns still.
