My new-to-me '07 LX has rips in both CV boots and is slinging lots of grease. My regular mechanic shop quoted $940 to replace both sides with Toyota parts. $500 in parts and $440 in labor. Does that seem reasonable?

The labor to reboot would cost more than just replacing the axles. The rips are also big enough that water and dirt may have gotten in the joints.
 
Toyota OEM axles are under $400 each if you look around. I would imagine dealerships are charging $500+ per CV axle. 2-4 hours seems reasonable for labor.

Hard to tell from the post if they're quoting you to replace the axles or the boots, imagine they're doing a boot job for that price.

Yes, many have posted that it is approx an 8 hour job to do both sides. You can get messy and reboot them yourself if you feel up to it. The reboot kit is approx $60 per side from Toyota.

Yes, reasonable. At 308k miles, new CVs are in order if yours are original. I would not even consider rebooting originals with that many miles, as the outboard shaft’s splines are likely worn. Have the mechanic replace the hub flange and repack/replace wheel bearings while in there.

do it yourself, it is not that hard. there is a great video on YT on replacing the cvs.

I replaced the passenger side CV in my old '03 a few years ago. It wasn't bad but not something I feel like doing both sides in the winter. My car is parked outside, and my small storage garage is occupied by the Porsche Boxster I drive in the summer.

The parts alone are around $700 if you can good online pricing. If they can replace the entire axles with new OEM parts for $940, that's a very good deal. I'd confirm that actually includes brand new OEM parts. Their pricing is too low to be genuine OEM in my eyes. I would not buy aftermarket axles.

The reboot is a huge labor investment and then you still have old splines and CVs. I bought new when my boots gave up.

I agree the price seems too low

Just picked up the truck. Mechanic swears he used OEM axles. Receipt shows correct part number 43430-60040.

Is there a way to look on the truck and confirm the axles are OEM Toyota?

The OEM axles do look different than most other CVs. There are some good pictures on here in a thread or two. Search google for "CV 100 series ih8mud" and hunt around a little. I bet you'll find a pic or two comparing them. The clamps and the seal at the back of the hub tend to be different, I believe.

If that's total for both new Toyota OEM Front Drive Shafts (AKA CVs) installed, it's a ridiculous low price. Jump on it fast!

~$355 is the best price world wide I can find for each Toyota OEM Front Drive Shaft (FDS). Then add tax plus shipping. Differential side tubes seal should be replaced to seat with new FDS add $$. Nice to flush frt diff at same time, at least top off, so add $. Then I always match new OEM FDS, with new OEM hub flange, gasket, snap ring and grease caps so add $$$. I'm usually push near ~$1K to my door for the works (parts) and prices have been going up.

Dealership are around $1,250 per side installed FDS, none of the other parts I mentioned are included.

Me, I replace FDS 8 out of 10 over rebooting. Saves on labor, and that savings can be used for parts instead.
 
I had the local Lexus dealership put in my internet-bought Toyota new axles which had yellow colored bands around the boots. They were going to put in aftermarket axles!

Funny how often dealership recommend rebuilt OEM or aftermarket. I feel Service Manager is trying to be helpful with savings. But really new OEM are well worth the extra $$.
