Repairing PTO winch on BJ42

I have an 82 BJ42 and the PTO winch recently stopped working. Now I just get a grinding gear and no grabbing. Any advice? Do I have it rebuilt? Can I put another PTO in it's place? Should I toss it and install an electric?

I trust you were not born with an innate knowledge of PTO engineering...I will develop a "clue" with a little help from my friends.

I would try and check the linkage first, might be as simple as it is not fully engaging when you put it in gear, this happened to mine once and it was right where the shifter connects to linkage under trans. hump.

Try to se if the breake pin has broken:D
PTO´s youst dont die sudenly....

when its engaged do the shafts spin?

is the flange off the case spinning?

as said above check the shear pin

Yep. I agree with what these folk are saying Desertchild.

A gear in your "transfer gearbox" should mesh with a gear in your "power take off gearbox" when you move your winch lever into an "engage position". So if this is working properly - you'll see the small-diameter driveshaft (that feeds the drive-motion up front to your "winch gearbox") spinning when you move your winch lever.

If it doesn't spin and you are getting the "grinding gear" sound - Then the problem is within your PTO g/box (or in the lever-mechanism that controls it).

If this driveshaft spins but the worm-gear on the winch g/box doesn't spin - Then you most likely have a broken shear pin. The shear pin acts rather like a fuse in an electrical circuit. It is designed to break/rupture in order to protect more-expensive components should the winching-load become too great. (You should always carry spare "shear pins".)

You should easily be able to see the front of that worm-gear-shaft (to see if it is turning) from the front of your vehicle.

But if the worm spins yet the drum doesn't revolve - Then you have probably stripped the teeth on the big gear that the worm engages with (inside the winch g/box).........
