Hi all,

This is my FJ55, it came painted this way, flat camo, ugly.

I am prepping to repaint it, using Rustoleum rattle cans, nothing fancy, dark blue all over except the roof (and maybe the hood) which will be bright white.

Problem is the PO painted that camo on everything including the rubber window molding. Is there a way to get that off?? I'd like to get it clean and black before I tape it all off.

Ideas?

Couple of ways that work, both would require removing the window. Red scotchbrite pad with lacquer thinner and elbow grease. If it's not too thick, a good sharp pocket knife held at 90 degrees scraped along the molding will take it off.

I used a Razor blade in a Mini scraper, same thing to get it off the glass.

wd40 that way you won't end up scratching the flares

Hey Dave...what did you end up doing...and how well did it work?

I tried paint thinner and one of those sandpaper spondge tings and it worked ok, takes off some color but doesn't get it back to black by any means. That's all I've done so far, going to try a stronger thinner of some sort next.

So for the mean time I have a blue and white truck with camo window rubber.

Here's a dumb thought...if it doesn't come all off, then how about some black shoe polish to both condition, and color the moldings?

Take the windows out, its actually easy.

Soak rubbers in Kerosene. That stuff works wonders. Cleans and conditions all in one step...

Paint is all done, I taped over the rubber and will clean it up at some point. For a rattle can job over a rattle can job, it came out ok, better then before that's for sure.

Thanks for all the tips guys, much appreciated.

I'll be honest, I LOVE it in my driveway, but on the road.... not so much. It's just a beast and the big tires+no power steering is a challenge. Need to sell it and get something smaller for the woods.

used 1,000 grit auto sandpaper yesterday to get the overspray off rubber seals on a BJ40 I painted. Worked well and didn't rough up the rubber. I took my time but it came out like new
