1994 80 Series. Started to change belts. Bolt head tensioning the adjustment rod is rounded so I'll have to remove the alternator to get it out. Looks like adjustment bracket has one bolt on the block above the idler pulley. I assume there's one or more bolts at the other end.
What do I need to remove to get out the alternator with the bracket attached? Will it come out without removing the battery tray? Things seem pretty tight around there, even for removing the alternator without the adjustment bracket attached. I'm assuming it's actually possible to disconnect the adjustment bracket from the engine with the alternator attached. Perhaps this is not even possible.
Any hints welcomed.

The plastic tank on my radiator is cracked so I have to replace it. When it's out I'll have a lot better access to the rounded bolt. Maybe I can even loosen it with the alternator i nplace. If not, I assume it's easier to get the alternator out with the radiator removed.

You could order a new adjuster bolt and use this (see below) to get out your old rounded bolt. Did you loosen the hold down bolt?

It's the hold down bolt on the adjustor that is causing the problem. I tried one of those on it this morning and it wouldn't grip. Perhaps with the radiator out, I can hammer on one of those sockets and see if it grips.

New radiator arrived a day before we left on a week trip to the NW, so I haven't had a chance to attempt to remove the alternator with the radiator out. We'll be back home next weekend and it's the first project on my list.

Got the alternator out with the bracket attached today. Radiator and battery box were out. Got the bolt with the stripped head out using heat and a vice grip. The trick was to remove the long adjusting bolt, heat the ear where the locking bolt went, the PUT A VICE GRIP ON THE SQUARE DEVICE the adjusting bolt threads through. When I hit the vice grips with a hammer the square device turned and turned the stuck bolt with it.

If anyone else runs into this problem you could probably get a large open end wrench on the square device from below while the alternator is still in the car and loosen the bolt that way. It looks like there is room to remove the long adjusting bolt with the alternator in the car.
