Easier to just ARB the diff and forget all the tools (and worries)?

Sure....

lets see ARB locker + install $1500

-----

3/8" socket set from sears $69
Snap Ring Pliers $15
Brass drift and hammer $15
Std Screwdriver $5
Roll of Duct tape $5

Seems equal.

Though I suppose the worries have value as well as the traction.

Haha of course it's easier when you dad has already bought and installed it for you.

This post is more for posterity in case someone has the same issue as me. I could not get the drive shaft off after removing the bolts. It was if there was positive tension forcing the shaft from the tranny to the diff and it would NOT compress so that it would slip off. The issue was the PO had put so much grease into the shaft that there actually WAS positive tension in the shaft and it would NOT COMPRESS. When I removed the grease alemite ... the grease spurted from the shaft ... released the tension ... and let me slip the shaft off. This was on my FJ40. Like I said...for posterity in case a future owner runs into the same issue...and searches the forum like i was.

I forgot all about this thread. My diff blew a few years ago on my way to the defense mine in DV. The tools discussed in this thread were all needed to remove the front DS & hub flanges in order to get me the 400 miles home.

I now have an ARB diff & hopefully should be good for a few more years.

Can you explain this more? The front of the front-drive shaft came off fine, but the rear will not budge... I've use a pry bar and hit it with my BFH and i'm getting nothing.

The issue for me was the PO pumped it full of grease and the seals were exceptionally tight. So pumping it full of grease caused active pressure attempting to expand it. I removed the alemite grease nipple and grease spurted out like I struck oil. After that pressure release, the drive shaft could contract and slip off with ease.

Right right... I dont get why I didnt understand that concept at first. I'll try this. Thanks!
