Yep they are the ticket. Hugh has one I think. Won't work my needs because it's basically permanent.

Rich - yes for this trip the propane bottle could go up top but not for my fishing trips. I'll look into the side storage issue.

Too many conflicting requirements but I'll manage.

Riley, looks good but I would definitely put diagonal plywood bracing on both sides to make it more of a box. Those L brackets do not look strong enough to me not to break in an impact (although they may hold enough that you get no missiles). I would also think about a piece of canvas or nylon as a cover flap for the remaining sides of the "box" once you do this, and also using the seat belt mounting floor bolt on the right as a third mounting point. The canvas would probably stop the tanks if the retaining straps did give out and also makes the whole thing easier to leave outside overnight if it's raining.

If you are nervous about the propane buy the smaller canisters and pack them in your duffel bags. I used to drive a vw bus and I eventually started using the smaller canisters because the bigger tanks always seem to stink of propane in confined areas which made me nervous.

Working outside today and checked my BBBQ tank. Label says to keep vertical when transporting. I can only guess they don't want liquid propane going through the relief valve if it gets over pressurized due to heat.
