Just a heads up (not affiliated): 12 Volt Solutions is running a little deal through end of July for their plug and play remote start system. I think it’s a touch over $200 shipped for the kit.

I’ve never installed a remote start system on my vehicle, but have owned beaters that came with them and the wife has had them. They’ve been somewhat touchy and problematic at times and that’s always been a concern for me. I daily the GX and take it to camping to somewhat remote places and a remote start system spliced into factory wiring that may cripple the rig when it acts up was never something I wanted to mess with.

That was a big attraction to the 12VS setup for me. It’s plug and play, two connections to the factory wiring that can easily be undone with a access given by a Phillips and 10mm socket if it acts up and disables the rig when out remote camping. I also don’t like additional fobs on my keys and this kit integrates into the factory remote.

Their instructions suck, mine showed a RAV4 guide that didn’t apply. Essentially, they have 3 connectors that may go to the car are two that go to their supplied control box.

You’ll only use two of the three: the BCM connector and the SLP (TL2, disregard the TL6). Here’s the harness and what comes with the kit:

Here’s the BCM connector, left of the steering column and behind the lower dash panel.

Here’s the SLP or TL2 connector, right of the steering column and behind the lower dash panel:

Plug both those in-line with the factory wiring harness and then plug the supplied harness into the control box per their instructions.

Do a little button push programming and bam, you have remote start that works with 3 lock presses on your factory key fob.

Cheers.

Agree that their instructions are generic and terrible, however the product works. Had it on my previous '17 Tacoma, and installed in the '16 GX within the first few weeks of ownership. Plug-n-play is a bonus, and reversible easily. 19 months and going strong.

Thanks JM. I agree the instructions are atrocious. How did you get to the BCM panel? On a taco thread it shows pulling off the side carpet trim and lower driver side outside panel. However, in your pictures, it looks like you got to the BCM just by removing the below steering wheel panel. Can you humor me and be a bit more specific which panel and how you need to remove? I did this in a 4R but this intall seems a bit different. Thanks!

I wish I had clear instructions for how to get to the BCM, but I took apart a lot more to redo my ditch light wiring and such.

Best I can tell you is to remove the lower panel under the steering wheel and it’s on the left. There’s two hidden bolts, one behind the kick panel and one behind a flap on the right side. Remove those and pull, if anything snags, see what and remove it. Top half of the panel will just pry out.

y'all still happy with the 12VSolutions kit?

Year and a half later and still very pleased with it.

Has worked reliably with no glitches.
Excellent! Would like to get remote start before summer comes around. Did you go with any of the extended range options?

No, just the standard key fob range. Works perfect at the house, but ends up too far away at work, but I knew that going in and was fine with it.
