So It seems the only way to get a wider center console in the 70 series is to relocate the parking brake lever. Has anyone undertaken this project before or attempted and failed or otherwise changed mind? Thinking of something like this mounted under the dash and extending the length of the cable to the firewall. Or this lever style that can be attached sideways as well!!

Did any Cruisers or Toyota pickups ever get the pull-and-twist type dash hand brake levers? IMO, that would be the way to go...fit one of those up. I know the Nissan hard body trucks and first gen frontiers had them...maybe one of those could be made to work if there's no Toyota ones....?

There is a guy with a RHD 61 who moved it over to the outside of the drivers seat when he put in wider seats.
It looks ok over there.
With a BJ74 you could get a cable from a 60 and then move it forward about 8-10". I am thinking of that solution,
as I want as wider console in my 60 as well. I'm thinking of seeing a 80 cable is that much longer than a 60 cable,
so I can move it forward. Otherwise I might move it to the outside of drivers seat.

Yes. First gen 4Runners and the solid axle pickups and first gen IFS 4x4 pickups used the pull and twist parking brakes. Others may have, but I personally know that those had them.

I know some guys have swapped FF or 60 series axles into their 40 series and in doing so had difficulty with the under dash pull and twist parking brake levers. Apparently they didn't have enough mechanical advantage for the rear axle parking brakes on the 60. The 40's have a crappy parking brake located on the transfer case that's about half the size of a regular drum brake. So whatever you do don't use a brake handle from a 40. What about moving the handle further forward on the tunnel. Do you have an auto or manual transmission? Sorry for posting a 40 series pic in a 70 series thread :)

I put an 80 series rear end under a 60 series and used the 80 series cable. There was plenty of extra length I had to kinda "snake" it around under the rig. I would guess I had easy 8-10" + that I had to snake around under there.

Well, maybe see how it works to move it forward. Just so long as the 'sweep' of the lever doesn't hit the dash
you should be okay.

Also, @deepseacruiser, I'd love to know what center console you're looking to fit in there. I am looking for something for my BJ74 that's bigger, better, and lockable.

Mark @cruisercrap is probably going to build one for the 7x series. @mmw68

I've been giving him info for the 7x area where this would sit.

Here is the thread: GIVEAWAY - New iCrap console - steel/lockable - protect your crap!

I hope he is able to get something squared away because his consoles are a really nice product.

That sounds awesome too! I'm assuming he's designing *around* the stock location of the handbrake and heater, rather than requiring them to be relocated and/or removed... Either way, cool! I'll def be watching for what he comes up with.

There is a few australian companies that build 70 series center consoles that have "divet" formed into where the paarking brake lever is. They are over $500 and look a little too nice and not necessarily ver rugged.

theferg, I am considering the current cruisercrap console and still moving the brake to accomadate a larger storage area. I am out of the country for a few months so I have some time to wait and procure parts. If by then a 7X model is available we will see.
