Thinking about taking this apart and getting the parts plated(which I did to all of my other stuff), sand down and paint the actual coil. Anyone ever disassemble one of these?

disassembly complete

Finished this last night. Came apart very easy. Only problem is under the cover there is a circuit board. this board is held down by 4 tiny screws w/4 tiny nuts. Got those out, however 2 Sanyo resistors are on the backside + there is the soldered connection with the rubber grommet. As far as I can tell, this cannot come apart w/o doing damage, therefore the housing holding the circuit board cannot be plated.

Can I ask who does your plating (gold cad I would presume) and might we see some cool examples?
I am restoring my 60 and have a nice pile that I want to have re-plated.
Do you bead blast the parts before sending them?

Joe

This is the place that does the work. they put the stuff in a tumbler(it has to be paint free however),
Commercial and Industrial metal finishing by Wisconsin Plating Works Racine, Wisconsin

They are really slow right now, so it all worked out. My suggestion is to do a search in your area. I met the owner , and he uses a zinc cobalt finish(very corrosion resistant).

I also think I put these pics in the for sale parts and my build thread. If you do find a place- plate EVERYTHING. I can't believe how my windshield washer bracket, gas pedal and other bits turned out. Monday or Tuesday I am bringing him my headlight buckets and all ignition coil bits.

try this

Wow, that stuff looks great. Thanks for the info. That place should advertise on MUD. Probably get alot of business.

Not sure if Bob(owners name) would want that or not. they are used to big production, but since the big 3 are big idiots, he has been doing nissan stuff and the like. I plan on going there today or tomorrow, I will mention it.

If he wants to do more, I have a whole pile I would like done. I know there are places closer but he did such a nice job on your stuff, and that is the exact finish I am looking for.
Please let me know and send me a contact if he's into it.

click on his link and contact him that way. It might kill you in shipping. If you do find a local, just make sure they use the zinc cobalt or similar. Plus he dealt with me in cash. On the website however, he does do estimates for LARGE quantities.
Good Luck. I will put up the pics of the buckets and coil as soon as I get them done.

Only question I have is how do you keep all the nuts and bolts straight? There really isn't a way to label them.

Did you make a list of what bolt size went where, or do you do a small batch at a time to avoid mixing them up?

Good question
read this(long thread now)
https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/76927-nuts-bolts.html

I think it only for 40 series rigs, but it will explain stamped numbers on the heads, sizes, everything. Coolerman has a downloadable list on his sigline.

No problem. Pics of the buckets and coil parts coming monday.

picked up my coil parts today. And assembled. You be the judge.

I have a few more angles of the headlight buckets on my build thread. I will be adding orange45's chrome bezel as well:cool:

Wowzers. That stuff came out great. I definately want my stuff done.
Would you mind giving an idea on cost?:hhmm:

Wowzers is what I thought each time I picked up my bits. I brought the first batch, and the owner said $75, I said deal.

I brought this last batch, and he charged me the same. I would say bring ALL of your stuff the first time, and you WILL get a better deal.
I did mention that their might be some mudders interested in his services, thought I would put that out there.

I don't want to waste his time unless several guys want their stuff done. I gave him my card, so we will see ...

Don't know how he would quote stuff w/o seeing it. It could be an avenue for his (fairly large) plating company. Maybe good email pics. I know if you go to their website, they have a form to fill out for estimates.
good luck
Scott
