My 2006 LC (VVT-i, AHC) has just passed 181k miles. Timing belt and water pump replacement was done at 93.5k in May 2014.
I know I need to do the timing belt service. I wanted to get some input on what other service should be done in conjunction with that. I believe in doing preventative maintenance beyond the minimum recommendations.

Already done: Transmission, transfer and differential fluids, spark plugs, coil boots, serpentine belt, heater T's,

I bought this Land Cruiser in 2019. I've owned it 5 years and put nearly 60k miles on it (including driving across the entire continental U.S.) The only unscheduled service I've had to do in all that time was an alternator replacement.

NOTE: Not long after purchasing, I did have an engine stall while on a steep climb (Baker Grade on I-15) while heavily loaded at 108º+ temps. Engine started after stopping and cooling down and it never happened again. I did purchase an OEM fuel pump and other associated parts. Next month I will be driving near the same area at the same time of year. Should the fuel pump be proactively replaced prior to the trip?

Thanks in advance!

Thermostat, fan clutch, water pump bracket, two larger hoses and clamps, flush power steering and brakes. As long as you have it apart, pull the radiator and clean the fins.

No need to replace the fuel pump. Add reflective insulation to your fuel tank and fuel lines where they are close to the exhaust.

@Bisho Thanks for the reply! I was just catching up on things here. Seems like the new consensus is that heat is the cause of fuel pump trouble. In my case it was hot - 108ºF ambient, plus heat effect from the asphalt, plus climbing that 6% grade at 70+ MPH while heavily loaded. It never happened again, but I never drove through high desert in August again.

What is the standard for labor hours for timing belt replacement on a 2UZ-FE VVT-I? Has anyone had their timing belt service done recently in the S.F. East Bay Area?

My labor guide says 6.5 hours for timing belt, cam seals, crank seal, and water pump replacement. Not uncommon for shops to mark up the labor time to somewhere in the 7-8 hour range though.

Are you sure that’s for a vvti? I thought the cam seals added quite a bit on a vvti.

That can't possibly be right for the vvti cams. Figure it would add a couple hours per side book time, pulling valve covers, cams, etc.

I just got an estimate from a local shop (East S.F. Bay Area) for $1470 labor and $921 parts. No mention of cam seals.
I have the invoice from the last time it was done on my LC. Toyota dealer in New Mexico. May 2014.
$500 labor, $299.52 parts.
Inflation is OUT OF F*CKING CONTROL!

Don't want to rush this. I'm not quite at 90k miles from the last service. Need to do a 1200 mile road trip. Thinking of inspecting the belt this W/E to see what kind of shape its in. Any suggestions?

I looked up a 2007 to quote that time up. It allots 1.2 hours for cam seals when doing it in addition to timing belt job. It does seem a little low, which is why most shops mark up the labor time to cover themselves in cases like that. These times are from Mitchell which is one of the most widely used labor guides in the industry.

I’m not concerned about cam seals at the moment. I understand it’s a LOT of extra labor on the VVT-i version (must pull cams out), and the job is already very costly, at least if I get it done locally.
What are the signs that cams seals are needed on a 2UZ-FE VVT-i?

That seems high but then again you live in SF California so what do you expect.

I'd get a couple more quotes. The 4.7 timing belt job is pretty common, you could probably call up shops / dealerships and get quotes over the phone.

Or just buy the Aisin kit and do it yourself.

Oil seeping/leaking from them. You can pull the TB covers to inspect them

I wasn’t expecting cheap, but I also was not expecting the Alien Anal Probe. 3x what a DEALER charged 10 years ago for the exact same service seems excessive.

FWIW I also live in the SF Bay Area (North Bay) and paid ~$1700 for a TB & WP job with bearings, etc last week. This was at a local Toyota dealership. I called a couple out of state dealers (Nevada, Oregon) out of curiosity and was quoted between $1600-$2200 for the same job. I had a local shop (not a Toyota dealership) quote me $1600 labor alone if I brought my own parts. I did not do cam seals

Thanks for this info! I’m kinda shocked the stealerships are not more $$ than the Indies.

Which dealer? I'm in SF and needing a 180k service. Was just going to go to an Indy who quoted $1,800.

I just found another thread where a member here said he paid $1600 for TB service at a "Toyota dealer in Walnut Creek" in 2023. I posted on the original thread and DM'd him to confirm. That is substantially less than the estimate I got last week.
Hopefully I'll have some info shortly.

Is the "Toyota dealer in Walnut Creek" you mentioned the "Toyota of Walnut Creek" dealership? I think some years ago some forum member mentioned they were good, better than most Toyota dealers in NorCal. Are they still doing quality work on Hundys these days? Maybe it's a dealership that services more 100 series than average in the bay area. I see many pristine W126 and W140 Mercedes running in that area. People there like to keep nice older cars running. :steer:

It's insane. I got a quote from an independent shop in my town which included me bringing my own (Aisin) kit and it was ~$2k.

DM'd you the info
