Hi: I have a 1997 40th Anniversary Edition Landcruiser with the stock roof racks. I am planning a beach trip (6 hours highway) and will have a large bike rack on trailer hitch. In order to take our dog, I will need to be able to fit a lot of cargo up top. Will the standard rack hold any substantial amount of cargo (coolers, suit cases, etc) or do I need something else, and if I need something else, can someone recommend what I could get. Thanks!

I believe the stock rack holds around 150lbs maybe. So you're not going to get a lot out of that. @reevesci of trail tailor has some of the best racks at the best prices. I would PM him and see if he has something for you.

If you're wanting to haul gear the actual roof is a great place to let bags and suitcases sit with the roof bars being used more like "walls" that hold the gear in place vs. strapping the gear on top of the load bars. That's why our roofs have those plastic strips to help keep gear from scuffing the paint.

I'd also suggest a roof box, the hold a LOT of soft gear that is otherwise bulky.

Now if you just WANT a roof rack, Gamiviti, Prinsu, or Front Runner would get my $$$$

Just installed a Prinsu. Pretty happy with it so far, but I do miss the basket-type I had previously.
