Warn and Ramsey both make a multi-mount, and I bet MileMarker does too.

Essentially, what you get is a winch-mounting tray welded onto a receiver insert. You then mount whatever winch you like onto the plate. Don't forget the quick-connect power cables! :D

First, I've had one or two situations in 15 years of wheelin where the ability to move the winch to the rear would be necessary...

Second, the side loading put on the receiver portion during a hard pull is IMO dangerous....at LEAST design your own custom double-receiver mount.

Third, a receiver mount pushes the winch still further ahead of your rig, killing your approach angle....so, you say, keep it in the bed until you need it....works great until your front bumper is pushed into a mud hole or a rock wall and you can't even install the winch to use it...

(as you may notice, I'm not a fan....lol)

That said, make your own custom setup...you can design it stronger and safer than the purchased units.

What's this I hear about a portable winch? Perhaps one that could be kept inside the vehicle until needed?

portables are WAY too cheap to be trusted....Harbor Freight has a few....great for ROLLING loads but not when you are actually stuck.

I've had my Multi-mount from warn since 1990 and I agree that the approch angle sucks with it installed. as far as strength with sideways pulls, that is why a hawse fairlead comes with them it will stall the winch before it would destroy the mount. I've always had more than one truck so that is why I bought it but I want to get another permanent mount soon, just to lazy to lug the thing around anymore.

I have the Warn on my 60 with F/R mounts and Woody right on it sticks out there. So I made a mount for inside. I solo travel mostly so the ability to winch from both ends gives me piece of mind.

What exactly do you mean "inside"?
