OK, so here we are again... this time I'm updating an already built '73 FJ-40
The specs on it as it sits here
1973 FJ-40
ENGINE: LT-1
TRANS: TH400
T-CASE: D300(Twin-stick'd, HD output rear)
FRONT AXLE: HP-DANA 60 (Center section moved to pass side, lock'd)
REAR AXLE: 14-BOLT (welded)
FRONT SUSPENSION: Leaf Springs
REAR SUSPENSION: 4-link w/ FOX air shox
STEERING: Full Hydro
TIRES: 42" IROKS on 17" wheels
BEADLOCKS: STAUN INTERNALS
CAGE: Hum...yea...Needs work?...yea
SEATS: Hunsukar...comfy
Ignition panel..12 volt guy
ALUMINIUM FUEL CELL
WHAT I'M DOING TO IT:
The D300 needs lower gears...so the owner got a 4:1 LOMAX gearset, HD output shaft for the front, and a rebuild kit.
The transmission needs some attention also...it leaks like a headgasket on a 6.0 Powerstroke
SO...off to the transmission shop it goes..gonna have it gone through, checked, and maybe a minor build on it.
Driveshafts...they seperate when the axles droop...gonna need longer spline...might end up with square tube shafts...and bigger U-joints...probably a CV shaft in the front.
Rear suspension...it works pretty well. But why leave well-enough alone? Lets change the Fox shocks to 16" S-A-W Remote Res. coilovers with dual rates and while we are at it lets redesign the shock towers.
Front suspension...Leafs are so...pre-2000 We got a 3-link kit from Proffitts Cruisers. And to keep the front of the -40 elevated, yep 16" RR S-A-W's. The front axle is getting pushed 2" forward to help with the approach angle.
CAGE...It would work to keep you from being smashed. BUT, it needs a major overhaul (IMHO). The area directly over your head is completly open..big enough for a rock to snake its way on to your melon...So, off it comes and I get to work my magic with my bender again.
BODY...the owner also purchased aluminum doors and windshield frame for it..so they will be getting installed. The windshield frame will be guarded by the new cage. All the stickers are gonna be removed and a new coat of paint, Safety yellow, will be shot on it.
