Sorry if I missed a similar discussion, but I couldn't find anything.

So, my initial plan was to just freshen up my top end, but after removing the head, it looks like I should replace my pistons/rings/crank bearings. My pistons have '50' stamped on top, so they may be 0.50mm over?

The pistons seem to have slop only in one direction, so I'm thinking they need bore. Question is, do I bore and put larger pistons, or do I put sleeves and std pistons?

Thanks in advance!

What year model is your 1fz? I have never seen Toyota pistons with those little circle stamp marks. You can buy new Toyota pistons .50 or 1.0mm over. You can’t buy sleeves for a 1fz that I am aware of. This is a picture of a OEM .50mm over piston.

@sadam_husain, you're right that I should certainly get some measuring done, and then I can make a more informed decision.

@Fj80oregon, the engine is from a Venezuela model, probably 2003 - 2009. From my research:

"Starting in 1998, the fuel injected version (1FZ-FE) was updated in certain non-US markets. This version of the engine received many updates over the previous version such as a redesigned head, more compact pistons, updated throttle body, an improved intake manifold with longer intake runners, 4 nozzle fuel injectors to improve fuel atomization and direct ignition (via a wasted spark set-up with three dual outlet coils); the engine pictured here is that variant discernible by the intake manifold and lack of distributor. This version of the 1FZ-FE produced 240 hp (179 kW) at 4600 rpm and 300 lb⋅ft (407 N⋅m) at 3600 rpm on 91 Octane Fuel (RON) without a catalytic converter."

I found it down here in Ecuador. Also, I'm beginning to think that the "50" stamp does not mean it's bored 0.50mm over, because of the "40" stamp you shared. Also, a mechanic friend shared this picture of an 1FZ piston bored 1.00 over.

I'm definitely learning lots here!

Hopefully I can still get away with std bore
