Reasonably quiet All Terrain tire (1 Viewer)

I am running the Defender LTX M/S and love it. However I would love a 285/75/17 and so far cannot find a good alternative from my current Defender.

The Defender does surprisingly well off-road in all terrains except for mud (but every tire sucks in mud)

I've had the G015 and now have a new set of the Terrain Contact AT (and in between I had the Wildpeaks). I do not off-road but do a lot of snow driving in the winter. The Conti is the quietest of the three and I just took a road trip from SF to Bend, OR and road manners are excellent. No snow experience yet. I had some uneven wear issues w/the Yoko's but overall liked the tire. I picked up four Conti's for less than $250 each on a price match @ Discount Tire. A VG deal.

I'd also say the Conti is what I would consider "AT light" - which is in line w/the Defender.

I just had 5 Michelin defender LTXs in the size 275/60/20 installed. Thanks for the advice.

I been very pleased with my Toyo open country AT3 for 3 years and 20k. They are a more conservative type of AT so they have pretty good road manners. That’s why are now factory fitted on the TNGA-F suv.

Ride is super smooth compared to my 7 year old bald 285/50s. What pressure are you guys running with the p275/60/20s? Discount tire put 35 psi "cold". I dropped it to 33 this morning which was 81 degrees. 33 is what is on the door sticker for 285/50s.

when I had lt275 60 r20, I think the “math” worked out to 40-42 psi to meet the minimum load requirements…which resulted in a jarring uncomfortable ride…which I later changed.

I later ran eurometric 275 60 r20 (non light truck/lt) and those I think could be reasonably run at the oem 33 psi (though I can’t remember precisely).

Check the recommended tire pressure thread. Nearly every configuration has had the textbook starting pressure calculated.

A different size just might need that 35.. but most tire shops are just as likely to inflate to whatever round number they feel like that day

Here's the "by the book" numbers for most P tires. I posted that, but also, I wouldn't recommend running the pressure from that chart. I subscribe to the belief that you shouldn't run a pressure lower than what your door card says.

Also, "cold" pressure means air inside tire is same temperature as ambient temperature, not necessarily cold.

I have been happy with the Michelin LTX Trail tires for street and light off-road. You can get them as takeoffs from the new Tundra pretty cheap on CL/FB/OU.

So true, and every time I go to Discount Tire there is a new set of kids working that always have trouble with basic instructions of a 5 wheel rotation and requested PSI.

More often than not I also have to show them how to lower the spare.

I am 8000 miles into a new set of KO2s on fresh wheels on my 200 series and I am not pleased with the road noise after 6000 miles. They get loud over 40 mph and reverb over 65 mph enough to cause a headache. I had KO2s in the past and loved them. I have rotated tires and checked drive train. I will retorque the suspension and check balance but if this doesn’t do it I am hoping to get some money back. This is BS. I want some better AT tires that don’t rattle my teeth, this is 2023.

A bit OT but twice now at my local Toyota dealer I have had issues with getting them to fill the tires. The first time, the wife was taking my old T100 on a road trip so I asked them check the spare pressure. Got the rig home and was showing the wife how to drop the spare. Got it down and it was way low. Called the manager who said bring it back in. My reply was I can fill it myself faster with a !@#$% bike pump.

The second time I took my LC in for basic service in the fall. All the tires were low as the temps had dropped. Part of the the service is to check the tire pressure and set accordingly. I was driving the rig home and noticed all the pressures were still low. Figured they needed a minute to reset. Nope, they did not. Got home and raised hell. Got a song and dance about the compressor being out. Said that was their problem not mine and asked for my money back for the full service. Which I got.

Contrast to taking my father's Tacoma in to Big O with a tire and wheel to mount so to begin a five tire rotation. Not a problem. He made sure the new tire would be on all four corners before becoming the spare. I asked if they would drop the old spare and put the other tire up. Not a problem. Guess where I will most likely buy my next set of tires?

Funny, with all this anti p-metric talk and I’m absolutely no expert on tires, I keep doubting my decision to run the 295/70r18 SL recon grappler tires even though this will see mostly highway, sand, gravel and mild forest trails.
How is this statement holding up? Did these SL work out for you ok or wish you had gone LT?

And how are those recons overall? Wet traction? Staring hard at them.

I need to retract this comment. Turns out one of my brand new wheel bearings from Toyota failed. They warrantied it and now she runs quiet. I was at my wits end trying to figure this one out.

Makes sense. I haven't found my KO2s to be any louder than the Defenders that they replaced.

As to the p metric vs LT discussion.

I run LT (C load) In the summer as most of my miles are towing a ~7k camper. And run p metrics in the winter since the camper is stored. the p metrics definitely ride softer.

Used P metrics for 9 years on my g500 before I had the LX a few summer sets on my 80 before that. found them to be much better in sand and mud then an LT.

The most puckering off roading I do ever summer is the 2-3 miles (each way) of sand to get to and from where we subsistence fish salmon. It is brutal extremely soft glacial silt sand where most people take ATVs. I off road fairly often almost year round. If I didn’t tow the camper I’d likely run p metrics in the summer as well for better sand performance.

I’ve run a few sets of KO2s and they are not quiet. For quietist I’ve run - defender LTX m/s. My buddy just put a set of Nokian outposts on his 200 this summer and they are really nice and also quiet.
my use case is very similar to yours. Our experience seems to also align.

I used Ko2 LT for years in 3 trucks. Loved them, but noisy . Ko3 not out inmy size yet

i listened to @TLC2013 and got General Grabber ATX . So far very very happy with them. Goes everywhere my ko2 does, but quietly

Will see how next few years go with them
