Reasonably quiet All Terrain tire

Yeah, they are factory AT tire on the upcoming 2023 Honda Pilot TrailSport………you sure that you want to be identified along the same line?! :D It is bad enough that people confuse LC with Highlander!
This was his question

“So the question is, what All Terrain tires are you guys happy with from a low road noise stand point? I do want something that has a least a slightly aggressive sidewall look.”

My answer was appropriate. If you’d like to discuss the pros and cons of the tire I’m game. But he asked for quiet AT feedback. I know the tough guys on this site like to clown any mild AT, but the reality is those are ideal for a large percentage of owners that see wet, rutted, dirt roads at worst.

I ran kumho AT-51 on an XJ and ram 3500. Cheap, quiet, definitely good enough for fire roads and gravel, packed mud worse than KO2s. I found them to be quieter than worn KO2s (tacoma and prado) and new AT3s (ford expedition). Different platforms from a LX, so YMMV.

In 2021 I did have a bad experience with KO2s ordered loose online from 4WP that wouldn't balance; 3 of 5 could not be balanced normally or on a road force machine. OTOH, I ordered a set of KO2s mounted and balanced from TR and they were fine. I have heard from two different tire shops that new KO2s can be a crapshoot in terms of out of round or balance problems.

I am running Maxxis AT811 on my prado and they are superior to the KO2 in terms of road noise, wet pavement traction, and on gravel/rocks/loose surfaces. They do pack mud similar to the KO2s. They are a more aggressive "hybrid" AT, aren't cheap, and I don't know how long they will last. I hope they don't turn to iron like KO2s do after 50% wear.

I was kidding…..

Think about it, the rear axle on a pickup truck is way behind the cab of the truck. You are much less likely to draw sound into the cab than you are when the axle is under the enclosed portion of the cabin. Sounds vibrates the sheet metal of the cabin which transmits like a drum. If you've ever done any sound attenuation to your vehicle, it makes complete sense. Dynamat and the like help to not allow the sheet metal to vibrate like a drum.
Remember that as a driver, you are closer to the front axle than the rear. Truck beds have zero insulation…all sorts of noise and vibration gets thru…and back side of cab are usually thin in insulation. For most high end SUV, there is a ton of insulation everywhere. For most vehicles, the truck is louder than the SUV counterpart. Why? Because truck version usually has less insulation than SUV. Example? Tundra vs Sequoia. Expedtion vs F150/250. Tahoes vs Silverado. Etc.

Yes saw this the other day. Good video on performance. They spent some money to do that one!
It seems about as comprehensive and “variable-fair” of a review as I’ve seen as well - for mild to medium ATs. Looking for their more rugged/true AT line up but not seeing one at first look.

I looked for the "rugged AT's" review as well. I don't think they've done it yet.

There's also this new Toyo R/T Trail coming out as well. A more aggressive sidewall than the original R/T and a tread pattern more like the Ridge Grappler. This is more of a Hybrid than a true A/T.

Forgot to ask my tire guy about these. I've read a lot of positives about these over the past few years. Not sure if he can get them.

I have a set in my garage getting ready to go on my 80. Ill report back my experience.

I don’t think those fall under the “reasonably quiet tires” from the looks of them…definitely a Ridge Grappler competitor though.

Just adding an exciting new suggestion. AT tires and reasonably quiet don't really go together in my opinion lol. Those that are considered quiet aren't really AT's by definition regardless of what the sidewall says, more or less aggressive all-season tires lol.

side tread gaps aren't that large (even compared to other RT style tires) I suspect it'll be acceptably quiet.

So true. If the Recons don’t work out for me, I’m giving the Conti CT A/t or Revo3 a try

lol, look at those tread voids. Dang near a mud tire and you’ll hear it. But, it does look pretty legit for rocky terrain. Those sidewalls won’t help with noise. My Ridge Grapplers look a little less aggressive and after 20k miles they make some noise. If my radio volume isn’t set at 18, I can hear them.

Looks kind of like the AT3 in steroids. Good looking tire for sure. Might be good on my truck next time.

I don’t know…if i look at it hard enough with the “random” style middle tread, then it almost look like KO2s….

I currently run Michelin LTX AT2 on my 100. I really like these tires and they have performed well in mild to medium off-roading trips. And the road feel is really good. I am by no means an aggressive rock crawler and I do not know how these will perform in a more serious off-road trail.

I though noticed the specs on the load range E is quite different than the P rated tire. See this chart.

The tire weight is about 25% more.
The tread depth is significantly deeper
Max speed is lower. Not that it matters in our rigs but the drop is noticeable.

How does that all translate to real life usage?
Is P likely to be quieter?
Is LT likely to last longer?

It's hard to tell from a picture, but I don't think those are mud tire gaps. Those are slightly larger than AT gaps disguised with big tread blocks. One gap is a typical AT gap, the other between the tread block pairs is only slightly larger. You can bet that Toyo did a lot of noise research and that gap is the one that comes with the best noise profile. It's another Duratrac or Ridge Grappler like side block pattern, and will have better noise profile than either (newer compound, newer design).

Also, this tire has little siping, which I find interesting (in a negative way).

A mine I used to work at almost exclusively ran these tires on fleet F-150s and F-250s. They worked well enough driving around the mine site, frequently with deep and sticky mud. There would be failures due to rock punctures and cuts when driven over freshly blasted (very sharp) rock, or when using 2WD and drivers allowing excessive wheel spin. Quiet on the highway, lastest pretty long too. A great and often forgotten option.

Your tire guy is feeding you some BS on the KO2's, I have had four sets since 2019 without an issue, many more amongst family and friends. Falken Wildpeak AT3w's are the most overhyped POS tires I can recall in recent years, I'd run Duracraps before those and I am no fan of those either.
What don't you like about the Wildpeaks? I've been quite happy with them in all weather and they have been wearing well.

Tread pattern is really similar. Hard for me to think there will be any major difference between the 2 in noise. Both tires seem to be positively thought of in reviews.
The Falkens don't sing on the highway above ~60 mph like the Toyos do. Around town I can't tell any difference. That's my experience, anyway.

Both are E-rated LT tires.

Well I got the Coopers mounted today. I told you guys I would report back. Granted that my experience with them is limited to today and running errands around town overall I’m really happy.
I know this is the 200 forum and tire noise is fairly subjective, but I think the Coopers are very well mannered. I can hear them, but they are quieter than the bfg ko2s on my 100. The Coopers look good and ride very nice. I got them in LT285/75r16 load range E and have them set to 34 lbs. I’m going to take them from Denver to Moab to go wheeling next weekend and so I’ll give you my thoughts after the trip.

Cheers!
