Rear wheel rattle

I just got a "bargain" 99LC,very clean,1 owner.After 500 miles of driving,only issue noticed is a noisy rattle from the drivers side rear wheel/brake disc area.Truck has new brake pads,or at least 90%...however if I go over a small bump or two something rattles in the rear wheel area.I checked the lugs,crawled under and checked the suspension elements,everything perfect,sounds like somebody left a bolt/lug inside a cavity and it rattles fenomenal,I can hear the sound if I tap the rear tire with my fist,sounds from inside,going over high speed bumps is dead quiet,small bumps or just kick the tire will start the sound for a moment,it gets 10 times stronger if I go over a chain of small pot holes...any ideas?

First thought: Maybe the PO put some type of metal balls in the tire for balancing (more common with large MT type tires)? That's kind of a stretch...but based upon your description...
 
I dont think so...brand new tires,however sound comes from inside,like wheel bearing area,inside the locker,it has lockers.
 
The front of my Landcruiser had a rattle when I first got it too. only over small bumps. turns out it was missing a bolt to the caliper...take off the wheels and check out the calipers..I'd check them all because sometimes sounds that sound like they are from the back really aren't...they just echo under the truck...
 
Mine was the center caps, they were just a little loose, I taped a small piece of hard plastic sheeting (actually cut a piece from a blister pack) on the cap to act as a shim, no more rattle.
 
I have been thinking about it...might be the parking brake drum loose,inside the rotor,cannot see it however,thats how it sounds,like a can with marbles.
 
I had noticed a similar perplexing sound that eminated from the front wheels. I noticed the "can full of marbles" sound only at low speed when traveling next to a sound reflective surface (concrete block wall, building, etc). A little sleuthing turned up loose hub caps. It seems that the stock hub caps are retained in the stock rims with the aide of a spring clip. This spring looses its tension over time causing the hub caps to wobble in their bores. Hence, the can full of marbles sound.

My ghetto fix was to place a postage stamp size piece of duct tape one 2 or 3 of the 5 bearing points on the rim. Just enough material to close the gap and silence the hub caps.

I concur that they made a "can full of marbles" sound, and that's basically what I did to fix it, but you explained it much better. :)
 
I had the same problem with my right rear. I found an old disc pad that had fallen down behind the rotor. It did some nasty things to the rear face of the rotor.
 
I have exactly the same thing on mine right now too. 93 80 series.

Have fitted new handbrake shoes, bearings repacked, dog-bone upgrade to try and get better adjustment. A very loud 'clinking' rattle from right rear wheel when you go over small potholes. Adjusted the handbrake again as per manual and it is much less frequent but still there.

Lift both wheels off the ground and hit the right hand rear tyre with a big hammer or your boot and it can be heard. No noise on the left hand wheel. Have pulled the disc off to check, but all seems in order. Driving me crazy.

General advice on rattles / clanks from the rear. Most likely suspension components and not your brakes.

- Most common would be sway bar links / bushings. Diagnose by grabbing the links and yanking around checking for play.
- Control arms / pan hard bar bushings could fail
- Spare tire
- Gas tank skid plate
