I read posts here on repacking the front wheel bearings. Do we have the same setup on the rear? I've got a 2000 LC and I'm thinking its about time I took a look at the wheel bearings.

No-The 100 has a semi float rear axle so no greasing/repack needed.

Anyone know why Toyota stepped back from the full float on the 80? Was it just a financial decision?

Here we go again?

Oh my...there's benefits to both. Any reason Toyota spent more money enlarging the rear axle shafts and R&P? (And almost all the other parts)

Come on Drew.

Just push play....:flipoff2:

No seriously, I want to know, because I think it was a maintenance decision. The semi-float is one of those forget about it things. It needs no maintenance until it goes bad at 200k miles. Only an enthusiast would realize the benifits of the full float and so Toyota, realizing their market for 100s was yupscale professionals, sent all the full floats to Australia along with the diesel motors. I am in no way disparaging your truck or any 100s. I love 100s and wish I had one---with a full float rear axle and a diesel.

full floaters are not that great....

benefits to both...dont start this agian.

Troublemaker! :D

I think Andy is correct. Maintenance and simplicity.

As for John's comments that the axle shafts are thicker, that's because they HAVE to be since they are now taking the full weight of the truck. Thicker shafts in a semi-floater does not inherently make the axle assembly any stronger than a full floater with "thinner" shafts. Please John, don't start spreading the misconception that the 100's thicker shafts mean it is a stronger axle...

Derek.....take a friggin' chill pill and please stop playing "far left-wing bomb thrower" by picking apart my posts. :)

The main statement of my post was that "there's benefits to both". Read the entire post. This was between Drew and me. The last thing I'll do is debate which is better. Overall, the friggin' 100-series bombs the 80's. Why, how, what part, which is better on or off road? Who cares. To each there own. Now go buy a 100 and shuddupppp. :D

John - Why do you assume I'm a left winger? You say tha the 100 axles are thicker as if that is a positive (i.e. better than the 80's "thinner" axles), without taking into account the entire context of that change that Toyota made. So I gotta pick apart that which is so obviously false. Sorry, it's a character flaw!

And, BTW, I have a 100. Had it since new in 2004. It is nice, but most definately does NOT bomb the 80. The only thing I would ever replace the 80 with is a UNIMOG (in fact I'm looking at some 416 Doka turbo diesels right now). I don't look at the 100 as an 80 replacement, it has an entirely different mission...

Twist Twist Spin Spin :)

I said nothing false. This is what I mean about you personally picking apart my posts. I said:

"Any reason Toyota spent more money enlarging the rear axle shafts and R&P?"

That is a true statement. That's all I said. And again...this was between Drew and me and he knew it. Nobody's debating anything. And yes, I know you ave a 2004. Now go build that thing and wheel in comfort!

Hey John,

Long time no seen. Hope you are doing good.

Is the 100's ring and pinion are really larger the 80's? Where this info coming from? Nothing I could find myself.

Thanks, Doron.

More splines, thicker and larger gears. Guess is to accomodate the added torque and power of the V8? This is why I'll not do the 80 pumpkin swap in my 100.

Others have taken the 100 ARB locker and 80 pumpkin and gears and made a usable 4.88 rear gear set. (Slee) I suggested you do this a while back due to your 100s weight. Nobody has had breakage or negative issues.

I will do this pumpkin swap on my next 100 that'll I'll build for the dedicated trail. You know I bought a LX450, right? I luv the 4.88's in it! Wish you and your family well!

I love stepping into the 100 series forum!:D

Derek is left wing, huh? I'll bet that's the FIRST time he's been called that. I'll have to buy him a Hillary for president sticker.

The rear axle shaft on my FJ40 is thicker than the one on my 80 series. Does that make it better? I've broken one of those.

And Shotts-you are the one who occasionally needs a "chill pill". Let me ask you this...If you could choose a full float, or a semi float, for your "uber" 100 rear axle, which would you pick and why?:flipoff2:

Hee Hee. I don't know if he's left wing or not. He just took what he wanted from my post....like the majority of people I see on TV.

I don't care which axles bigger. Comparing the two rigs is pointless. That's the 4th time I've had to say that now? :D

I ALWAYS need a chill pill. High stress. Sales. These posts allow me to vent. Just make sure you don't ignore the :D and  and the like in my posts. :D

That's TWO low-blows from the master of spin, John Schotts. John, did you get beat up often as a little kid? Just curious, it would explain a lot.

I love how comparing the two rigs is now pointless (only when it suits him)!

Andy, see all the fun you're missing over here? You should visit more often!

Are you and Drew related? :D

And the thread is about Rear Wheel Bearings. (Not comparing rear ends. It's been debated often on other threads. No need to do it again here.)(Is that the 5th time now?)

Come by the 100 forum more often. As the 80's age more and the 100's get less expensive, we'll all be wheeling 100's soon.

another thread going to pot?

and leave your rear ends out of this, please.... (shudder...) :)
