Where is the "rear trans seal" located? Dealer inspection determined it leaking. They wan't $95 to replace, so I figure it will take about 15 minutes to do myself, just not sure exactly what they're referring to.

Thanks

You may want to make sure it is a rear trans seal, this would involve removing the t-case to get to. If it is a rear output seal on the t-case then that may be a cheap estimate to do, or is it the o-ring for the speedo sender on the t-case. No really if it is the rear tranny seal then you would have to remove the t-case. Usually if this seal leaks then you would also want to change the tranny output suppoert bearing at the same time(as this may be the root casue of the leak. So only the o-ring for the speedo is a 15 minute job. later robbie

Its not the speedo o-ring, that was also identified leaking upon inspection. They wanted $85 for that. After reading that it was an easy fix, I decided to try and fix it myself (first DIY job). After some help locating it, it took me less than 5 minutes to do and I got a whole new perspective on these matters :) I've since replaced plugs, wires, cap & rotor, valve cover gasket, fan clutch, front rotors and pads, fully-serviced birfields, cleaned throttle body, inspected valve clearances, and left them alone (thanks by-the-way). All the while impressing friends and relatives :D
But anyways...it sounds like if the rear trans seal really is leaking, $95 is a fair price...go figure. Where should I look to confirm this diagnosis?

Thanks

Where is the leak? that is where I would first confirm it. Maybe after you find a leak you can repair it. Post some pictures on the list for us to see and let you know what's up. 95 dollars for this repair is a little wrong, Like I can not inmagine removing the t-case and changing the seal and reinstalling it for 95 dollars. later robbie

No, I didn't realize that at the time, and neither did my local parts guy (prior to starting my relationship with our resident parts guru). No more leak though so I guess that little one was ok.
