Has anyone removed their solid spring mounts in the rear of their 40 and "frenched " them into the frame . I know the back shackle mount would need to be moved inboard also . This would give a little more articulation for hte rear axle and also make it easier when moving the whole spring setup rearward.

hey,

i'm moving my mounts back currently, and i really found no reason to french them into the frame.

i'm not sure what your setup is going to be, but i am moving the spring hanger rearward about 8 horizontal inches. since this is on the upward slope of the rear frame, it also moves it upward somewhere between 2 and 3 inches vertically.

this is about the same distance you could hope to move your hangers if you frenched them.

i am putting my shackle hangers on the backside of my bumper, in-line with the frame rails and my spring hangers are square with them, so they have moved "in" a bit on the frame since the frame splays out more as you get farther toward the rear.

clear as mud?

How are you attaching your shackle hangers on your bumper? Does this mean that you need to disconnect your rear springs in order to remove your bumper? seems like a pita. What springs and shackles are you using?

welding to the bumper. why would i remove my rear bumper?

i guess some clarification would help, ha ha. i've stripped down my frame and pulled the stock rear crossmember/bumper. i'm replacing it with 2x4 .250 tubing. it's a no-frills design. i should have some pics up in a couple of days...i'll start a thread for my summer build up then.

i'm using fj55 rears in the rear w/ some fj55 spring hangers from proffitts and some shackles and 'way back' shackle hangers from ruff stuff specialities.

My 60 had springs that were frenched into the frame. If you look at project Bob, there are a bunch of pics of them..

My 40 used to have the springs directly under the frame in the rear. I basically did what Malphrus is suggesting. Ran the spring directly under the frame with the shackle hanger welded directly to the rear xmember so it sits verticaly.

The kicker on teh 40 is that I did not need to actually french the springs into the frame. the frame "kicked" up right where I did this so I litterally plated the frame (slight spacer) and ran the 55 springs to that. I'll go look for some pics.

BTW, what height do you want? I was about 23" to the frame on 38" SX's..

I just finished doing what Malphrus was describing. Check out my Snotz build thread.

Great build threadon"Snotz", that gives me lots to think about and even more work . I'm planning on installing 55 springs under my 40 and wanted some ideas.
The PO put 4" rancho springs on and thats been about 10 years ago and those things still haven't softened up, the ride is killing me as I use it as my daily driver so any thing I can do to get a little better ride us worth the work.

the static ride will not change by frenching in the rancho springs..

You planning on doing a SO and returning to stock springs?

If you do SUA with stock 55 springs you will be lower than stock..

Thanks for that info as I really don't want to go backwards in my build. I guess that I'll be making the anti-wrap bar sooner than I planned. I've been doing a lot of research on thest and think i"ve finally found a design that I'm happy with.Just like most of the stuff I fab I'll probably over build it and it will weigh a ton but it's better to be over built and never break it than to build it twice and pay for repairs that were avoidable.
