Has anyone set up a cottage shop that rebuilds FZJ80 axle lockers? You know - send your possessed e-locker assembly to them and they send you back a cleaned up, rebuilt ready to install one.

Is there a 'rebuild kit' that has a fresh spring, seals, etc... being sold anywhere?

Thanks!

There is Zuk who has experience rebuilding 80 E-lockers; gearinstalls dot com, you send him your 3rd and get the same one back. Justdifferentials dot com sells a Master rebuild kit but it doesn't appear to include the carrier bearing shims which may be a dealer only item. IIRC the complete set of shims costs something like $160 with Mud discount; you don't use all of them, just that apparently you don't know which sizes you need until the rebuilder starts putting it back together. Wait for others to chime in, never done it myself.

It's a lot easier than it looks to do it yourself. Mine was rusted solid and full of dirt.

Two days soak in deisel. Then i used a bench vise to hold the housing and a skinney screwdriver through the fork bolt hole in the pin to work that out. Scraped the housing clean. Took the motor out and re soldered the lead for one of the brushes. Re-attached the magnets with jb weld white lithium grease for the bearing.then i used a spray called chain break w moly to free up the springs. It works great now. My buddy the heavy equipment mechanic said there was no hope but these things are built really well. It's maybe a 1.5  job.then if u screw it up then send it out or buy one from cruiser parts. Just my .02

Sorry - I should have specified. I don't want to rebuild my third - I just want to R&R my electronic locker(s). My rear locker is misbehaving - used to work fine.

That is what I had in mind - but the big thing I don't have right now is time. I was hoping that we had someone on here who was rebuilding them for a fee who could send out a replacement rebuilt one (with a big refundable core charge) so I could swap them out in an hour or two and send my core back to him to rebuild for the next guy.

Unfortunately I can't take my truck down for 3 days right now.

Ok, you're looking for someone who rebuilds Toyota E-locker actuator motors and has spares.

Re-attached the magnets with jb ....

Can you provide any guidance on the orientation of the magnets when reinstalling? When I cleaned my locker assembly I had loose magnets. I reinstalled them but the motor still does not work and I think it's related to how the magnets where put in.

I'm still surprised that none of our vendors already offer this...

I could see it working along the lines of:
$200 for the rebuild + $500 core charge. (These are guestimates - I did not create a business plan/case/analysis on this.)
Send out a shiny working rebuilt locker.
The customer swaps them out and sends back their old one.
Core charge gets refunded.

Customer does in a half day (or less) what would have taken his truck down for 3 days as parts are soaked, scrubbed, seals sourced, etc...

Beno - I dropped Robbie a PM. Thank you for the referral. I know you and Cruiserdan should not quote prices in forums - but can you give us a range of where to expect a rebuilt rear electric locker assembly (motor, actuator - whole setup as a bolt-on replacement unit) would cost?

Maybe the above service isn't offered because it isn't needed - which would be the case if the dealership can sell a rebuilt one + core charge for less than $$$$.

The big problem would be cores, they are somewhat rare. Also, there is the probably of the returned core being junk, what to do there? I have refurbished several of them, don't have a problem doing it for others, but wouldn't want to deal with cores.

You could easily do this in a night. If you can't get it done you can simply bolt it back onto the differential and drive it disconnected. I'd be sure to reattach the shifter? fork to the actuator shaft though. Unless you know that driving with the shifter fork lose on the axle is ok.

the only reason mine took so long is the fact that it was completly solid from sitting full of dirt for god knows how long. i have no history on the truck other than it lived in new york then miami. im sure the breather sucked up mud and dried into the dirt i found. most that ive seen on here have been no where near as corroded as mine was. has it ever worked that you know of? If its worked before it probobly just needs a little cleaning and grease. but you can pull it out in 15 minutes then open it up to see how bad it is then decide what you want to do.

Might have to look into this. Have a rear and front sitting here as spares, just have to be gone thru. They were not working when i got the truck so just bought some new ones and have put these on the shelf to be gone thru later.
