Rear Hatch Door Won't Lock Any Ideas?

87 FJ60 rear door won't lock. Is it supposed to be the same key as the ignition. I don't have it in front of me, but I think I remember being able to turn the key but it just doesn't lock. I hate shopping and having to worry about somebody coming by and opening the door and taking my stuff. Any ideas or anyone have the parts to fix it? I don't mind having a seperate key to use it. Thanks in advance.

FJ, Raise your top hatch which will give you access to 2 inspection covers. Simple, just a few screws & you can see what moves/doesn't move when you turn the key.

Yeah, I had taken those off before. I think the key turns the knob, but doesn't work the lever for the locking function. I'll have to look into it more. Just thought maybe someone could steer me in the right direction. Thanks

I believe you are on the right track & will find your solution inside the upper hatch. On your '87 there are no electrics in there, all mechanial, you turn the key & it moves a rod etc. Something is likely bent or a pivot point has fallen off.
