Is there a cover and handle that are missing from inside the rear door?
Pic is of my 78 FJ40. Thanks for the help.

There is a plastic cover that goes over the end of the handle.

Is there a cover that goes over the gear mechanism?

Your also missing the plastic knob for the door lock.

Nope. no cover over the gear part.

Not the best pic I have.
The plastic cover over the handle is missing and a knob for locking the lock is missing. I used a knob from a fan to solve my problem.

That is the same type of mechanism that is used on the early FJ40s. No cover over the gears. There is one other thing missing not yet mentioned. Directly below the gear that engages the cross bolt is a shaft that sticks out from the frame of the latch mechanism. This shaft has a countersunk hole drilled across through the shaft, and at the base of the shaft is an oval shaped cam. This locks the latch and door. There should be a knob on the shaft to make it easy to grab and turn to either lock or unlock the door.
